ANDREW JOHN MCKENZIE February 21, 1952 - April 7, 2012 Peacefully, with his wife and children by his side, Andrew died from complications resulting from diabetes and hypertension. Although he left us much too soon, we take comfort in knowing he has gone home to be with the Lord he loved so much. Left to forever cherish Andy's memory is his wife of 38 years of marriage, Linda; son Michael; daughters Jody and Shawna; son-in-law Michael Roy; granddaughter Claudia Roy; father James McKenzie; brother Jim (Emma Sutherland); sister Sheila (Mel Kiesman); sister Lorna Stacy; father-in-law James Baker and friend Margaret Trotter; as well as numerous nieces; nephews; cousins; aunts and uncles. He was predeceased by his mother Ruth; mother-in-law Hazelle and infant twin sister. For most of Andy's working life he was a self-employed carpenter. Largely self taught, no challenge was too great for him to tackle and there were few things he could not do. He was always willing to lend a hand and would help anyone who asked. His family meant the world to him, no was simply not in his vocabulary where his children were concerned. Dad was the go-to guy, always there when needed. He undertook major renovation projects with all three children, passing on his knowledge and expertise along the way. This is his lasting legacy! Andy was a longtime member of Grant Memorial Baptist Church and was part of the choir and drama groups for many years. Music was a big part of his life, he was always so happy singing. No project was ever undertaken without the accompaniment of music. His CDs and CD players were always coated in drywall dust and wood shavings. Andy was a member of the Assiniboine Golf Club for many years. He shared his love of the game with his son Michael and spent many happy hours on the course. Andy's life took on new meaning with the birth of his granddaughter Claudia last March. His little sweetums was the light of his life. Words cannot describe the joy this tiny person brought to him. Grampy was able to spend many, many hours with Claudia during the past 12 months. We were so very sorry that he was not able to be with the family for her first birthday party. On Friday, April 13, 2012 Andy's Funeral Service will be held at 10:30 a.m. in the Chapel of Memories in Wojcik's Funeral Chapel, 1020 Main Street at Manitoba Avenue. The family would like to express appreciation to the staff in SICU and MICU at H.S.C. for their professional, respectful care during Andy's final 15 days. Thanks also to Dr. Al Schroeder for his compassionate care over the years. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Andy's memory to Darcy's Arc, Suite 5-510 Sargent Ave., Winnipeg, MB R3B 1V8. Rest in Peace, My Love.

Condolences & Memories (7 entries)

  • It's difficult to believe that it's been 38 years since I sang at your wedding Linda. Andy did love music and had a beautiful voice. He is now singing in Heaven's choir. Our sympathy is with you Linda and your family. - Posted by: Bruce & Melba McGeachy (cousins) on: Apr 13, 2012

  • Andy was one of the first friends and encouragers that I got to know when I first came to Grant Memorial Baptist Church. We shared the love of music and were in choir and Living Christmas Tree productions together. We shared many other involvements in music and drama ministries. However, health problems in more recent years limited Andy's involvement and we did not see much of each other. I am reflecting on memories of the past and can endorse all the comments being made about Andy's talent, humour and willingness to help. I am deeply saddened by this loss but glad to know he has eternity with the Lord he loved. - Posted by: Fred Dugdale (friend, fellow choir member and LCT alumnus) on: Apr 13, 2012

  • My most vivid memories of Andy was like those of so many others... he loved to sing. We were in many dramas, choirs, contata's together and his friendship with my brother Garth was so fun to see. They liked to talk and kibitz with each other but one look from the choir director and they were back to serious business. At that time his curly hair was his signature. My condolences to his family, God's peace be with you. - Posted by: Doreen Edwards (friend) on: Apr 12, 2012

  • I didn't have the chance to see Andy very often in the last few years. But every time I did - he welcomed me and my family with the same good nature and sense of humour I always knew him for. My deepest condolences to Linda, Michael, Jody, and Shawna - he'll be greatly missed. - Posted by: Leigh Wolfrom () on: Apr 11, 2012

  • Garth and I will miss Andy as he was a true friend they shared many hours together in many forms, drams, choir and Garth was only too happy to help in the reno of Shawns's basement. About 3 years ago when Garth was away, Andy came and rescued our family from freezing as the fuse for the furnace blew, Andy was there fixed the problem, checking up with us to see if we were ok, days later - Posted by: Garth and cecily De vries (friends) on: Apr 11, 2012

  • I remember meeting Andy for the first time at Christine and Regan's wedding. Sydney who was Andy's cousin introduced me as hopefully soon to be her daughter in law. I remember how he joked around with me. Also another great memory I have of him playing Santa Claus on Christmas Eve and how the kids were so excited to see Santa. I am so sorry to hear about Andy and wish we could be there on Friday but will be thinking of him and the family. - Posted by: Tracey Wolfrom () on: Apr 11, 2012

  • My prayers are with each memmer of Andy's family. He was a great friend and cousin; one that I respected, admired and looked up to. I will always remember his smile, and the joy he brought to every room he walked into. - Posted by: Keith Bailey & Family (Cousin) on: Apr 10, 2012
