JOHN (JACK) THOMAS COULTER Peacefully with family by his side Jack Coulter passed away on Friday, April 6, 2012. He is survived by his love Mary and his loving children Kerry (Garry), Jim (Diane), Brian (Jill) and Pat (Mike). Much loved grandfather of Scott (Anne), Carly (Marc), Erin (Patrick), Terra (Shane), Andrew, Marijke, Anna, Julia, and great-grandfather to Liam. He is survived by his sister, Maisie Park. Born August 24, 1921 Jack grew up on Logan Avenue at the City Pound. As a young man he began his career as a firefighter serving overseas in Southampton and then with the Winnipeg Fire Department for 42 years finishing his career as Chief of the Department. He was a Founding Director of the Fire Fighters Museum of Winnipeg and actively enjoyed going there into his 90th year. On June 15, 1946 he married Mary Redmond to whom he remained devoted to the end. As he and Mary raised their own family on Oakwood Avenue, Jack spent many of his years volunteering in the Riverview community. Rosedale United Church was an important part of their life and he actively served that faith community volunteering in many capacities. Jack was a dedicated family man. He took great pleasure in passing on his practical wisdom to all of us. When all other commitments in his life were put aside, Jack would head out to Block 13, Lot 46 West Hawk Lake. He and Mary chose a unique and beautiful spot to build their family cottage in 1958. This was their piece of heaven on earth and countless happy memories were created there. It was a peaceful place where he would rarely rest in favour of puttering..... enjoying family dinners, swims and laughter with his grandchildren. The family would like to thank Dakota House and the many staff and friends who supported Dad while he lived there. A heartfelt thanks goes to the staff at the Riverview Health Centre 3E for their compassionate care extended to Jack and his family. A service in celebration of his life will be held on Friday, April 27 at 1:30 p.m. at Churchill Park United Church, 525 Beresford Avenue, Winnipeg, Manitoba. In lieu of flowers, a donation to the South East Whiteshell Fire Department (Box 88, West Hawk Lake, MB R0E 2H0) or a charity of your choice would be most appreciated by the family. Tax receipts and family notification would be provided. Jack will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

  • Sorry to hear about Jack's passing. I recall many great times that Jack and Mary and Family allowed us to be part of their lives as neighbors on Churchill Drive or the special times out at West Hawk Lake. Jack was such an inspirational person, I even tried out for the firefighters as he was a person worth emulating. He was so kind and soft spoken, he will be missed but always cherished in the memories he leaves behind. - Posted by: Nigel Fortlage (Friend) on: Apr 14, 2012

  • Diana and I will always remember the many times we were invited to Jack and Mary's cabin at West Hawk Lake. We and our family had many hours of enjoyment as they always made us feel like we were part of the family especially sitting down to a large dinner set up to accomodate a large gathering. We know how much that part of the world meant to them both and we will always keep in our memories as time goes on. Thankyou Jack and Mary and the Coulter Family for sharing with us those good times. Love Clive and Diana and The Boys! - Posted by: Clive &Diana Morrison (Friends) on: Apr 14, 2012
