SARA GOORVICH (nee GAMBERG) Peacefully on April 4, 2012 at the Grace Hospice in Winnipeg, at the age of 88, Sara Goorvich (nee Gamberg), beloved wife of the late Saul Goorvich, devoted mother of Michael (Linda) of Deerfield, IL, and Lyle (Lisa Pearlman) of London, ON, and Bobbie of Jonathan (Katey) of Culver City, CA, and Saul and Anna of London, ON. Always remembered is granddaughter Shona who passed away in August, 1998. Sara is lovingly remembered by her sister Eva Levine (Montreal), sisters-in-law, Annette Gamberg (Santa Monica), Elaine Charlat and husband Harold, and her nieces and nephews. She and Saul created a traditional Jewish home. Saul was supportive of Sara's forward thinking as an independent woman and their relationship was an equal partnership, something atypical of the era. Sara's courage and positive attitude helped her to cope with Saul's unexpected death in 1978. She faced adversity with strength and resolve and continued to focus on her children, grand-children and strengthening the Jewish community in Winnipeg. Sara's independence and strong work ethic led her to a long and distinguished career spanning 43 years, culminating as an executive secretary for several CEOs of the North West Company. Not only was she a highly valued colleague, but she mentored future generations, many with whom she developed long lasting friendships. Following her retirement, Sara became a world traveller, meeting new friends and remaining active as a community volunteer. She had many passions including cooking, vegetable gardening, knitting, crosswords, Scrabble and of course, Bridge. Sara's active lifestyle was maintained upon moving to the Shaftesbury in 2010 where she made many new friends and rekindled old ones. Funeral services and interment were held at Rosh Pina Cemetery on April 6, 2012. The family is requesting that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to The Shona Goorvich Fund at the Jewish Foundation of Manitoba, 204.477.7520. The family is deeply appreciative to Dr. Bruce Martin, the home visiting Palliative Care nurses and Grace Hospice.
