JOHN KENNEDY FLEMING April 6, 1920 - April 10, 2012 John Kennedy Fleming passed away at Deer Lodge Centre on April 10, 2012. He celebrated his 92nd birthday on April 6, 2012. He was predeceased by his wife Ruth (Postill) Fleming in June 2009. He was the youngest child of Bert and Clara Fleming and was the last of his siblings to pass away. John joined the Canadian Army in 1941 and served overseas with the XII Royal Manitoba Dragoons. After returning to Canada he attended the University of Manitoba, graduating in 1948 with a Diploma in Agriculture. He farmed for a number of years in Souris, MB. John worked for the Department of Veterans Affairs at the Brandon Regional Office of Veteran's Land Act Administration. Subsequent to that he worked at the Manitoba Agricultural Credit Corporation from which he retired in 1975. Shortly after retiring he and Ruth moved to Lethbridge, AB where they enjoyed many happy years of retirement. John and Ruth always welcomed family and friends to their homes in Brandon, MB and Lethbridge, AB. A visit to their home in Lethbridge often included a scenic drive in the surrounding area and they were always delighted to share their love of Waterton Lakes National Park with their visitors. John and Ruth were at the forefront of recording family history, both in writing and photos. They willingly shared family history with those who were interested. Prior to moving back to Manitoba in 2010 John donated family treasures to the Cabbagetown Regent Park Community Museum in Toronto, ON. John moved back to Manitoba in July 2010 at which time he took up residence on Tower 5 at Deer Lodge Centre. When planning his move to Manitoba his one wish was to visit the farm where he grew up. Thanks to Garry and Carol Fleming and family for making that wish come true in August 2011. We hope you know how much that visit meant to him. Thanks to all staff at Deer Lodge Centre for making John feel at home . A special thanks to Dr. Griggs and all staff on Tower 5 for welcoming John into their hearts. You provided him with excellent care and he spoke fondly of each one of you. He appreciated every act of kindness and always loved being called Uncle John . Each of you was an angel of love and kindness. In John's memory donations may be made to Deer Lodge Foundation, 2109 Portage Avenue, Winnipeg, MB R3J 0L3. John died as he lived - with dignity and honour. He will be remembered fondly by all who knew and loved him. A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • What a wonderful tribute written about a very special man! A true gentleman and "gentle man." How fortunate we were to have known him. Our family made 3 trips west when our children were young in the late seventies, and each time we were welcomed so warmly by both John and Ruth. We well remember those trips with them being shown the places they loved themselves. They are treasured memories. - Posted by: Bruce and Jackie Somerville (Friends) on: Apr 16, 2012

  • I am the hairdresser/barber at Deer Lodge Centre and offer my condolences to John's family. He was one of the nicest, friendliest, kindest men I have ever met. I always enjoyed when he came in for a haircut and will certainly miss his visits. - Posted by: Sandra Magnusson () on: Apr 14, 2012
