DOUGLAS EARL EDMONDSON May 20, 1933 - April 10, 2012 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Douglas E. Edmondson, surrounded by his family on Tuesday, April 10, 2012, at Douglas Campbell Lodge, Portage la Prairie. Doug was a loving and supportive husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and brother. Doug was born in Oakville, Manitoba, on May 20, 1933, to Barbara and Leonard Edmondson. He grew up in rural Manitoba working in many different Manitoba Pool Elevators. While working in Birtle Manitoba, Doug met the love of his life Charlene, and they were married on July 2, 1953. Throughout the years Doug and Charlene moved around the province, while Doug worked for Sun Life and then found his passion selling cars. Once he started selling cars he quickly moved up the ladder as a General Manager of Birchwood Motors. In 1978, Doug decided to venture out to Portage la Prairie, and purchase a car dealership of his own. He proudly owned and operated Edmondson Chev Olds until 1992. Doug was also an active politician and allowed his name to stand for the position of Mayor of Portage la Prairie. He won and served his community from 1988 to 1992. Doug was a member of the Masonic Lodge, and a proud Shriner. He spent many years driving his miniature Yellowhead Roadster at parades and at the Shrine Circus. Doug took pride in his children and his grandchildren. He was his grandkids #1 Sports Fan, never missing a game and cheering as loudly and proudly as he could be. Doug was also an avid Terrier Fan, if he wasn't able to make the game he was listening to it tentatively on his radio, right until his death. Doug is predeceased by his wife, Charlene, his parents Barbara and Leonard, his brother Art, and grandson Daniel. Doug leaves to mourn his children Debbie Faurschou, Earl Edmondson, Leonard and Judy Edmondson, Darlene and Thomas Yurchak, Pam and Parker Garnham, 17 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. The Family would like to express their gratitude for the excellent care and support provided by the entire staff of Douglas Campbell Lodge. A memorial service to celebrate Doug's life will be held on Monday, April 16, 2012, at the William Glesby Center, 11 2nd Street N.E., Portage at 2:00 PM. As an expression of sympathy, if friends do so wish, donations may be made to Douglas Campbell Lodge 150 9th Street S.E. Portage la Prairie, R1N 1B7 or the Heart and Stroke Foundation, 103 Wilkinson Crescent, Portage la Prairie, R1N 1A7. Arrangements entrusted to RONALD MOFFIT MEMORIAL SERVICES, www.ronaldmoffitmemorialservices.com

Condolences & Memories (3 entries)

  • Doug was a longtime friend from Kirkfield-westwood C.C., and a great boss at Birchwood GM. Without a doubt Doug is the best "closer" that I have ever had the pleasure of knowing and working with. A true gentleman and friend. You will be missed. - Posted by: GARY WHYTE (FRIEND) on: Apr 17, 2012

  • I was privileged to have met Doug at the Strathcona Curling club in the early to middle 1970's based out of the Highlander. A competitive curler who was a very nice man. Anyone who lives and dies with the Terriers is a great man. I just got back from a 6-day visit from Winnipeg yesterday. Even though I lost touch with Doug, his integrity and cheerful outlook will be sorely missed. Doug is not lost in God's memory. Just as Jesus resurrected his friend Lazarus, it should be the hope of us all to be reunited one day soon under God's kingdom again with Doug. Even Jesus was moved by the loss of Lazarus. Such a loss as Doug's seems to be permanent but it is merely temporary. What a blessing that Doug touched our lives in the manner he did!
