JOAN MOWAT December 9, 1921 - April 14, 2012 It is with great sadness we announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, with her family by her side, on Saturday, April 14, 2012 at Victoria General Hospital. Joan was born in Brighton, England and came to Canada in 1945 as a war bride. She was predeceased by her husband Don, her parents Cecil and Anne Day, and daughter-in-law Charlene. Left to cherish this wonderful woman's memory are her six children, Alex, Margaret (Dan), Don (Marilyn), David (Vicky), Bill (Norma), Barbara (Dan); also her 11 grandchildren Heather (Ron), Tammy (Jared), Jamie (JJ), Susan (Chris), Tara (Curtis), Jason (Lisa), Melanie (Henry), Tracy (Dallas), Cory (Skie), Krista, Kelly (Chris); as well as nine great-grandchildren and one on the way. Also to cherish her memory is her only brother Fred Day and sister-in-law Betty in England, and her brother-in-law Clare Drummond in Edmonton, plus numerous nieces and nephews. Her greatest passion in life was supporting her husband in his career and raising their six children. Some people laughed at Joan and Don for having so many children in those days but Joan laughed back many times and said she wouldn't have changed it for the world. She loved knitting for her numerous grandchildren and she always made something special for each of them whether it be some homemade soup, a casserole, or their special cake. The family wishes to thank the staff on the 4th floor of the Victoria General Hospital for all their care and compassion during the last week of Joan's life. We would also like to thank Dr. E. Braun. Interment has been held. A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, April 20, at 2:00 p.m. at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main Street. In lieu of flowers, if friends so wish, donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba, 10 - 120 Donald Street, Winnipeg, MB R3C 4G2 or the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba, 6 Donald St., Winnipeg, MB R3L 0K6. TTFN - Say hello to Dad for us. Goodbye my family, My life has passed. I loved you all to the very last, Weep not for me but courage take. Love each other for my sake. For those you love don't go away. They walk beside you every day. CROPO FUNERAL CHAPEL 586-8044

Condolences & Memories (17 entries)

  • My deepest thoughts and prayers to my Winnipeg cousins on your loss. I remember visiting all of us Toronto Mowat's staying with the Winnipeg Mowat's for a few weeks when we were very young-we had a great time. Also each Christmas we all anticipated our exchange of Christmas presents. My dad [Don's brother] ensured we knew who our relatives were. I enjoyed our time with Aunt Joan and I have nothing but fond memories and good thoughts, our love to you all. Alex/Grace/Steffani and Nicole. - Posted by: alex mowat (nephew) on: May 15, 2012

  • My condolences to the Mowat family. I have fond memories of Joan at Elmhurst. She was a very lovely lady. It was always a delight to see her and to chat with her. Ron - Posted by: Ron Franks () on: Apr 22, 2012

  • We met Joanie many years ago when our girls were young and missing their grandparents in Ontario. Joan became my 2nd Mom and a grandmother to our girls. She was a beautful and caring lady with a great sense of humour. She took lots of teasing from both Dan and John during her visits to Leduc but she gave as good as she got! I know she will be missed not only by her children but also by her many friends. Barb - our thoughts are with you at this time. Love Susan and John - Posted by: John and Susan Kretz (good friends of the Barb & Dan MacDonald) on: Apr 20, 2012

  • I am so sorry to hear about the passing of Aunt Joan. Aunt Joan was a wonderful Aunt and she held a very special place in our hearts. I remember her visiting us in Toronto and she was always interested and always smiling. I also remember fondly a song "Knees Up Mother Brown" and her full of song. I am glad we got to Winnipeg about 6 years ago so my son William could meet the Winninpeg Mowats and Aunt Joan. It was a brief visit but memorable. We always wished we had managed to get back out there. The whole Winnipeg Mowat clan reflects the loving parenting they had. My son William said he loved meeting his Winnipeg cousins and it was the best Christmas ever. To all of my cousins I send my sincere sympathy as I am so sorry for your loss, all our love Jane Mowat, Roy and William - Posted by: Jane Mowat (Neice ) on: Apr 19, 2012

  • I first met my Aunt when she was visiting her family in Brighton in 1955. She was so much like her Mom.(My grandmother)She would be the life and soul of any party. Her speciality being "knees up mother Brown"!! I remember we all met at the British Legion club on Brighton seafront where Grandad was Treasurer and did we have a laugh!! Her visit left a lasting impression on me. It was some years later that she returned to England this time with her husband Uncle Don, Margaret, Barbara and Don and their spouses. Liz, I and Sarah (Robbie was too young) have fond memories of those precious days together. After the 2nd World War Auntie Joan travelled to Canada originally for a six week stay but then she met her man and started a new life and before long was mother to six children. And now with job well done she completes her amazing journey to a better place as we salute her life's achievements for she will never be forgotten. - Posted by: Melvyn Lewis Day (Nephew) on: Apr 19, 2012

  • I never had the pleasure of meeting Joan but Bill has always spoken of her so lovingly and tenderly. I certainly enjoyed her lemon cake and the smile on Bill's face when he spoke of her. My deepest condolences to you, Bill, and your entire family. - Posted by: Diane Reese (Co-worker of Bill Mowat) on: Apr 19, 2012

  • What a courageous and determined young lady. At such an early age to leave her family and the comforts of hone in Brighton and journey thousands of miles to meet her new in-laws in Winnipeg. I often wonder if whe realized how much joy and comfort her presence brought to the Duncan family. - Posted by: George Duncan Thom (Nephew of Sydney Charles Dumncan) on: Apr 19, 2012

  • I grew up with the Mowat children as my friends and with both Mr. and Mrs. Mowat as an important part of a close neighbourhood.
