SOLANGE CHABANNES (MADAME SOUCHAY) Peacefully, after a brief illness, Solange passed away on May 2, 2012. She leaves to mourn her passing her spouse Bruno Gossen, her children: François, Annick and husband Fred and their children Stéphanie (Stephen) and Nathalie; as well her stepson Karl and wife Brook and their children Willow, Asher and Summer, and stepson Paul and wife Sharon and their children Matthew, Kendra and Alex. She will also be sorely missed by Elizabeth, and her close friends Micheline and Jean, and Tena and Levi and long-time friend Anne. Her family in France, sister Odile and husband Michel and their children Jean-Michel (Emmeline), Eric (Annabelle) and Nathalie (Sylvain) as well as Denis' family will also miss her tremendously. She will be fondly remembered by the many people whose lives she touched: her many students over her long teaching career, the members of the Winnipeg Sketch Club and the Reh-Fit Centre and everyone she met in her daily activities. Solange was well-loved and lived a full life. After her retirement from teaching, she and Bruno shared many adventures travelling the world including trips to Asia, the Caribbean, Europe, Australia and Cuba. Their fellow travellers often became friends as she easily befriended people who had similar interests to her. Her lifelong interest in art was a driving force in her retirement as she developed her skills as an artist in a variety of ways and was always interested in going to art shows and galleries as well as displaying her own works. Some of her other interests included cooking and baking, and the family always looked forward to receiving her Christmas baking and heavenly chocolate truffles. Family dinners were always memorable and she never forgot to include favourite items on the menu. Solange's spirit of love and hope lives on in her art and our fond memories of her. A private celebration of her life will be held on a later date. The family would like to thank the nursing staff and the doctors of E6 Medicine at the St. Boniface Hospital for their kindness and compassionate care. In lieu of flowers, and in keeping with Solange's interest in education, donations will be gratefully accepted for the St. Boniface Hospital Foundation's It's All About Me Program which supports literacy in science for elementary school age students and encourages them to think about science as a possible career choice. Donations can be made in Solange's memory through their website : http://www.stbhf.org/english/template.cfm?tID=401 and clicking on donate now or by mail at: St-Boniface Hospital Foundation - It's All About Me Program, C1026-409 Taché Ave., Winnipeg, MB R2H 2A6.

Mme. Souchay was my favourite teacher. I lived on the corner of Harper Ave. and Betournay, and every morning and afternoon I would stand on the back step and wave to her as she passed on her bicycle, "Bonjour Mme. Souchay!". I always got a wave back, a smile and a "Bonjour Sarah!". She was a very special woman and I will always feel lucky for having been her student. - Posted by: Sarah Olson (Former Student) on: May 31, 2012

I was truly saddened yesterday to hear of Mme Souchay's passing. Although she taught me in kindergarten and will always be my very favorite teacher, my first memories of her were standing on my back porch on Harper and Betournay and yelling "BONJOUR MME SHOUSHAY" at the top of my lungs as she rode by on her bicycle smiling. Even at three or four years old I lived for that moment in the morning :) she was a phenomenal lady and will be missed by so many whose lives she helped mould. - Posted by: Melissa Olson (Former Student) on: May 31, 2012

Dear Bruno, It was a sad day to get the news of Solange getting sick but even sadder the news of her passing. You know how much you both mean to me and my family. You and Solange were there for my parents when they needed you. I only wish that I could have been there for you at this time. I am so glad to have spent that little bit of time on my last visit home with you both. Solange was a special person who really had a flare for loving life! I know that somewhere both Dianna and Solange are planning and planting their gardens and deciding if it is a weed to pull or plant to let grow as Solange curses at the rabbits and Dianna yells at the squirrels. - Posted by: Shelagh Ryan (Friend and Neighbor) on: May 07, 2012

Madame Souchay was my kindergarten teacher 26 years ago at Ecole Howden. She was my older brother's teacher before that, and she even was my dad's teacher, close to 50 years ago. She had a unique way of approaching her students that made each and every one of them feel special and important. I can clearly remember that she greeted me every day with a big smile and a hug, and that itself made me want to go to school every day. When she retired in 1993, there was a huge celebration at the school. I was only in grade 6 at the time, but I remember that I was not the only one crying that she was leaving teaching. She touched many lives during her long career. It's easy for me to say now that Madame Souchay is one of the reasons that I became a teacher, too. She truly lived by the saying, "People may not remember what we say, they remember how we made them feel." She was an amazing lady who will be missed by hundreds of her former students, their parents, and her colleagues. - Posted by: Melanie St. Pierre (Student) on: May 05, 2012

I am sorry to hear of Mme. Souchay's passing. I was in her K class in the 1983-1984 school year, and can still recall how wonderful and kind she was. - Posted by: Ryan Monchalin (Former student) on: May 05, 2012
