MARCEL PELLETIER December 22, 1922 - May 6, 2012 It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Marcel Pelletier on Sunday, May 6, 2012, at the Grace Hospital with his wife and children by his side. Left to cherish his memory and celebrate his life are his wife of 58 years, Viola, son David (Kim), daughter Janet (Steven Goetze), grandchildren Adam, Evan and Deanna, sisters Yvette Belanger and Jean Moore, as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins. Marcel was predeceased by his parents, Leo and Edna, and his brother, Raymond. Marcel was born and raised in St. Boniface. He served five years overseas during the Second World War in the Canadian Armed Forces with the Canadian Corps of Signals. Upon his return to Winnipeg, Marcel obtained a Bachelor of Arts at the University of Manitoba and, in 1951, embarked on a highly fulfilling career in education. Marcel later earned his Masters Degree in Education from the University of Alberta. His incredible energy and creativity, along with his genuine interest in and effortless rapport with students and colleagues alike, made education the perfect career path for Marcel. His passion for teaching and working with people was so boundless that, following his retirement from the Winnipeg School Division after a 37 year career, Marcel became a member of Creative Retirement and started a French program for seniors that he taught for 18 years. Marcel and his wife, Viola, were avid bridge players, ballroom dancers, gardeners, and mall walkers. The family also took many memorable trips together. As lifelong supporters of the arts, Marcel and Viola frequently attended Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra concerts, Manitoba Theatre Centre plays, and many more of the rich cultural and artistic offerings in Winnipeg and on their travels. Sincere thanks to the attending staff at the Grace Hospital for their kindness and compassion. Cremation and burial have taken place. At Marcel's request, there will be no Memorial Service. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Winnipeg Foundation (www.wpgfdn.org). The light that you brought into our lives cannot be extinguished with your passing, for it continues to burn brightly in the hearts of every one of us who were fortunate enough to be touched by your friendship, kindness, generosity, humour and love. You will be deeply missed.

Condolences & Memories (13 entries)

  • Marcel Pelletier was my Grade 5 teacher at Lord Roberts in 1964-65. He was inspirational to me for his ability to teach anyone, anything. He taught anyone who wanted to learn, how to play chess. He encouraged us to learn to communicate in French. He was always smiling and was the kindest teacher - never harsh, never judgmental. He was a true gentleman. My sincere sympathies to his loved ones; you must miss him terribly. - Posted by: Sheila (Porter) McBeath (Former student) on: Aug 20, 2014

  • Marcel was the pioneer of Creative Retirement Manitoba's French Language Program. He was the keystone as the principal instructor, and creator of a whole series of excellent Language books. His enthusiasm, skill and friendly nature endeared him to everyone who worked or learnt from him. One of his legacies will be CRM’s French program. - Posted by: Richard Denesiuk (Staff with Creative Retirement) on: May 15, 2012

  • Dear Viola and family, my husband Glenn and my son Adam join me in expressing our sympathy with you at the passing of Marcel. Though distance, life's frequent demands, and the upsets of poor health have prevented our two families from forming close relations, still the loss of a beloved member of the Adam family grieves us, and leaves a vacuum where once his spirit dwelt. Yours with sympathy, Marie Adam (Pete's third daughter, Ottawa) - Posted by: Marie Adam (cousin to Viola) on: May 13, 2012

  • Marcel Pelletier was both principal and my grade 6 teacher at Brock Corydon School in 1955. I never forgot what a wonderful human being he was and remember him with great respect. In the many years following he would see my mother Belle Rykiss at her Bridal Store and always asked about me and sent regards. My deepest condolences to his family. He was a truly wonderful man. - Posted by: rhonda matias (former student) on: May 12, 2012
