Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryGREGOR (GREG) IAN WHITE February 8, 1923 - May 9, 2012 Gregor White beloved husband of Helene of Calgary passed away on Wednesday, May 9, 2012, at the age of 89 years in his home following a brief illness. Born February 8, 1923, in Edinburgh, Scotland, the son of Dr. Frank David White MD/PhD and Nina MacGregor-White RN. His family immigrated to Winnipeg, MB, Canada in 1929. In his early years, Greg attended St. John's College School, later graduating from Kelvin Grove High School in 1936, at the age of 16. Greg started at the University of Manitoba as a pre-med student. He quickly realized medicine was not his calling and enlisted with the Royal Canadian Navy, as an Able Seaman at the age of 17. Greg was assigned to convoy duty on the Atlantic Ocean, as an ASDIC Operator on the frigate HMCS Buckingham. He was honorably discharged at the end of the Second World War, as a Naval Sub-Lieutenant. Upon his return to Winnipeg, Greg enrolled at the University of Manitoba, graduating in 1947. During these later years he became a member of the Zeta Psi fraternity. Following his graduation Greg headed west to Alberta to begin his career in the oil patch. He met his wife, Helene, in Edmonton and they married in 1952. Greg first worked in the oil industry for Pacific Petroleum, and then a U.S. company, Texas Pacific, before starting his own company White Minerals Ltd. in 1966, which has been his passion ever since. Greg had a great affection for animals, and was a strong supporter of the S,P.C.A., The Humane Society and other animal rescue organizations. Greg is survived by his wife of 60 years, Helene (nee Oxley) White; his many relatives in Scotland; and many close friends. Funeral Services will be held at McINNIS HOLLOWAY'S Park Memorial Chapel (5008 Elbow Drive S.W. Calgary, AB) on Wednesday, May 16, 2012, at 2:30 p.m. Condolences may be forwarded through www.mcinnisandholloway.com.
