BILL HANSON It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Bill Hanson on May 16, 2012, just short of his 58th birthday. Bill will always be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by his wife Cathy and daughters Jessica (Trevor Farski), Marcia and Kyla, and the newest member of the family, his granddaughter, Lilija. He will also be remembered by his brother Russ (Cindy) and his sister Judy, all of his extended family, and his many friends. After graduating from the University of Manitoba, Bill started in the advertising industry in Toronto. After three years he returned to his home town of Winnipeg to accept a position at Palmer Jarvis Advertising. Moving to CKY-TV as an Advertising Sales Account Executive in 1983, Bill was appointed to progressively more senior positions at the station from Retail Sales Manager to General Sales Manager. He was promoted to Vice-President and General Manager of CTV Winnipeg in 2002. He loved his job, and often talked about the terrific team he worked with, and all the good people he had contact with because of his work. Bill was involved with various broadcast associations, Boards, and committees. His volunteer service to the community included past member of the Board of Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Winnipeg and as Vice - Chair of the Board of the St. Boniface Hospital Research Foundation. Bill had a tremendous love of music and he spent many peaceful hours either listening to his favourite artists or playing his guitar. He enjoyed golfing with his friends at Breezy Bend and was particularly pleased the day he had a hole-in-one. He renewed his passion for photography in the last year and was looking forward to documenting, with pictures, the life of his precious granddaughter. But mostly, Bill was a loving and devoted husband and father who took great pride and pleasure in the joys experienced by his wife and children. A memorial service will be held Tuesday, May 22 at 2:00 p.m. at Westwood Community Church with Reverend Michael Wilson officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to CancerCare Manitoba.

Dear Cathy-- I live at the end of the country and its taken a long while for the news of Bill's passing (and your happy marriage!) to reach me. I am glad to have found the tributes here and to have a chance to leave a late one of my own. I moved away to Montreal after grade ten but it was around that time one of my last memories of you was hearing you say, after Bill walked by on a sunny day, "that's Bill Hanson and I'm going to marry him one day." And here I am all those years later reading of your marriage and then great loss, truly the love of your life, and the wonderful life and family you had together. It's been some years now and I hope the pain of your loss has eased.... And you have a little grand daughter to love. I hope the returning Spring will bring good things and happy memories to you in this, another new year, and perhaps if ever you visit Victoria, please look me up. I'm also on Facebook and my full name is Paulne James Curtis. Xx old friend. Hope to see you again :) - Posted by: Pauline James (Childhood friend) on: Feb 26, 2016

So sad to now learn about Bill's untimely passing. My sincere condolences to Cathy and family. As mentioned by all the other tributes, Bill was uniquely liked and likeable. The last time I ventured to Winnipeg he and Cathy invited my wife (Cathie) and I to lunch in their Summer Dining room. A unique space, Mosquito-proofed via 360* of window screens. Gracious, funny and warm, they both seemed very happy and extremely proud of their children. Enamoured with each other and GOLF!!...both eagerly anticipating their next round. The last time I talked to Cathy, she called me, a Victoria resident, for an immediate eye witness account of our earthquake. I was impressed with her professionalism. Sad as is his premature passing, Bill had a great life with a great partner. That's as good as it gets. - Posted by: Victor Anonsen (High school Friend) on: Apr 14, 2013

I worked for Bill at CKY-TV for a number of years, but he never allowed me to think that he was my boss. He always treated me as a person first and we had many great and funny conversations about life. I took much good advice about fatherhood from him as my son was born during the time I was at CKY. I'm glad the opportunity arose for me to tell him I missed him after I left the company. My condolences to Cathy and the girls. I'm sure I'm one of many who thought they had a special connection with Bill. That was his gift. - Posted by: Andy Alksnis (coworker) on: Jul 13, 2012

I was very sorry to hear of Bill's passing and wish to extend my sincerest condolences to Cathy and the rest of Bill's family and friends. I haven't seen Bill, Cathy or my other old friends in Winnipeg for a long time, but think of many of them and Bill, particularly, very fondly. Bill and I were good friends in high school and university and I remember my friend as the big, handsome, intelligent man he was. Even more than all of those wonderful qualities, I always envied Bill for his good nature and clear sense of his place in the world. I am happy to hear that he lived such a rich, rewarding life even as I am saddened by his untimely passing. - Posted by: Ken Morrison (old friend) on: Jun 29, 2012

Dear Cathy, Jessica, Marcia and Kyla, We are so saddened by the passing of Bill and send our deepest sympathies. We really cherished the time we spent with you all last year in Vegas for Trevor and Jessica's wedding. The love and closeness of your family made such an impression on Corey and I. Bill was such a warm and friendly guy with an infectious smile. He made us feel like a part of the family. It's clear he was amazing father and would have made an ever better grandpa! We are thinking of you all. - Posted by: Holly and Corey Giasson () on: May 29, 2012

I am shocked and truly saddened to learn of Bill's passing. Although I hadn't seen Bill since I left Winnipeg many years ago, we were friends from those formative years that you always remember and from which lifelong bonds emerge. It doesn't even seem all that long ago that we gave Bill a trophy just for being "The best guy we know". That is how I will remember him. He will be missed. My condolences to Cathy and the Hanson family. Bill Fulton, Dundas Ontario. - Posted by: Bill Fulton (friend) on: May 29, 2012

May your cherished memories of life together be a comfort to all of you at this difficult time. - Posted by: Jan and Geoff Currier (Jan grew up in St. James, we were both former collegues of Cathy's and a friend to Bill.) on: May 28, 2012

Dear Cathy and family, my deepest condolences to all of you. I first met Bill on the playground at Linwood school at the start of our grade 5 year. We went on to share a number of memories, many of them while qualifying for our scuba diving certification. I will remember Bill as a caring and very thoughtful individual. I know he will be missed. - Posted by: David Martin (childhood friend) on: May 24, 2012

I am profoundly saddened by the passing of Bill. He was and always will be remembered as a tremendous person. Having worked with Bill for many years while I was in Winnipeg. I have many fond memories. I also had the opportunity to meet Cathy on a few occasions and she too is a wonderful person. Bill's family always came first, so I delighted in making a commercial with his then young kids. Even though I hadn't spoken with Bill for a little while, I will miss you dearly Bill. You truly made the world a better place for everyone. - Posted by: Glenn Hansen (Co-worker and Friend) on: May 23, 2012

Bill befriended me at SJCI and though I would say we were more acquaintances than friends and I didn't see him often, he always greeted me with a warm and friendly smile. The service yesterday was a fine and worthy tribute. - Posted by: Jim Fogg (Acquaintance) on: May 23, 2012

Bev & I would like to extend our sincere condolences to Cathy and Family. I had the great pleasure of working and playing with Bill during the TMG era. Really, what an outstanding man. He enjoyed a wonderful time when Television was KING and he delivered such value to both those that he reported to and those that reported to him. Honest, sincere, understanding and tough when circumstances dictated. Bill always had a funny story to tell, especially when the girls were learning to drive! Bill had class, a gentleman who will be dearly missed by his family, many friends and business associates. - Posted by: Monte Graham (Business Associate) on: May 23, 2012

Dear Cathy, I was so sad to hear of Bill's passing. My heart goes out to you. I have so many fond memories of us as children and was so pleased to find out many years ago that you and Bill had married. I don't know if you were aware that I lost my brother Bill to cancer 10 years ago. I always thought that you and Bill made a great match! All my love and prayers Jayne - Posted by: Jayne Earl (Burton) (childhood friend) on: May 22, 2012

I worked with Bill when he began his career at Ogilvy & Mather in the media department. We knew from the beginning that he was going to be a success in the business. We were sorry to see him leave the company but respected his desire to move on. Have followed his career and was thrilled and not the least surprised with his success. But most importantly he was such a generous and kind human being. A great loss. - Posted by: Phyllis Grossman (Worked with Bill in Toronto) on: May 21, 2012

Dear Cathy and Family. Our deepest condolences to all of you. It has been a while since we spent some wonderful times together on the CPSA Board. Bill was a devoted attendee during his term as Director. His insight, engagement and desire to advance the sales profession was unique and genuine. I enjoyed his company whenever we met as Bill had a great sense of humour and a very caring approach to things. On the annual trips Vicki always enjoyed hooking up with you Cathy. We sure had some amazing experiences. We were so saddened when we heard the terrible news and wanted you and your family to know that our thoughts are with you now and always. - Posted by: Rory and Vicki Lesperance (Friends) on: May 21, 2012

Bill and I were very close frinds from the time I moved to Guildford, until I left for Montreal. We had a lot of fun together, especially remember the times we slept out in the back yards and playing football on the golf course. I'm sure he will be missed.
