JEAN SHYPIT (nee TKACHUK) Genia Jean Shypit succumbed to her three year battle with lung cancer at the District Health Centre in Vita, Manitoba, on Friday, May 18, 2012. She left this world as she lived in it - with courage, without complaint, and more concerned that she was inconveniencing others than she was with her own troubles. Mom was a good and decent person who gave more than she received and lived for those she loved. She set an example and standard of high values that she, as others, learned from growing up on hard times - be honest, work hard, keep a kind and generous heart. Mom was born in Gardenton, Manitoba, on June 18, 1936. Eventually, the family moved to a farm near Menisino where Mom grew up and went to school. As a teenager she worked briefly in Winnipeg before she married Mike Shypit one week before her 19th birthday. The young couple settled on a quarter section of land just outside Sprague, Manitoba, and set about farming and raising a family. Jeff was born a year later and wore pre-purchased pink baby clothes since he was going to be a girl. A second boy, Rick, came along a year and a half later and yet another boy, Allan, five years after that. Mom stayed home raising the boys until that difficult job was done. She then went to work as a housekeeper until she retired at age 65. After retirement she had more time for herself to pursue her hobbies - picking wild strawberries that the boys loved, canning fruit, making jams and pickles, working in the huge gardens she and Dad would plant. What might have seemed like tireless work to some, was enjoyable to Mom because she knew it benefited others. Mom loved animals and enjoyed her time with the farm animals and various dogs, cats and other pets. She also enjoyed reading and knitting. Mom was predeceased by her parents Kost and Annie Tkachuk, and her brother Johnny in infancy. She is survived by her husband of 57 years Mike, her sons Jeff (Diane), Rick and Al (Sandra), her granddaughters Linda and Lana, her older brother William Tkachuk (Doreen), her older sister Mary Dueck and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank all of the medical persons and social and care workers who helped make her final decline as pleasant and comfortable as possible including the staff at CancerCare Manitoba, Dr. Reimer and the staff at Bethesda Hospital in Steinbach, Palliative Care and Home Care South Eastman District and especially the staff at the Vita and District Health Centre. Mom was very grateful for their kindness and good humour. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations to a cancer care or research facility or an animal shelter of your choice.

My parents both grew up in Gardenton and I heard the Shypit name often. My mom Katherine Faykes Tkachuk and my dad John Tkachuk are both from Gardenton and were probably related in some way. Condolences from our family. - Posted by: Joyce Tkachuk D'Aguilar () on: Dec 26, 2014

Mike, Jeff, Rick Al and families May the memories of family times, smiles, laughter and love help you through this time of grief. I remember going to the farm and not being allowed to leave the table until Jean was convinced that I had had enough to sustain me! Very good memory. Our hearts and prayers go out to you and your families. Pat and Noël Latour Ottawa - Posted by: Pat and Noël Latour (Family friends) on: May 23, 2012

Growing up with Jeff and Rick, having been to your home so many times made me realize what a special mom you have. I feel for you and I offer my condolences. All my best to Jeff Rick Allan and of course your dad who was my dad's boss as well. A special family with a very special mother! - Posted by: Leland and Stephanie (friend) on: May 22, 2012
