NICK HOLUNGA It is with much sorrow we announce the passing of Nick Holunga on Thursday, May 24, 2012, in Winnipeg, peacefully after a brief illness, at the age of 89 years. Left to cherish Nick's memory are his daughter Carol (John) Vermeer; sisters Mary Pitz, Winnie Woroniuk, Betty Guenther, Gina Rice; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his wife Phyllis Joyce Holunga (West) in 2004; parents Nestor and Irena Holunga; brothers George, Willie, John and Alfred, and sister Vera. On March 2, 1923 Dad was born in Shell Valley, MB. He was a Gunner in the Royal Canadian Artillery during the Second World War, serving in the United Kingdom and Continental Europe. He had many occupations throughout his life, ultimately joining the Winnipeg School Division #1 as a custodian in the early 1970s, retiring in 1988. Dad enjoyed baseball, curling, the outdoors, music and tinkering in his workshop - he was creative and artistic. He played the violin and harmonica, and took part in Folklorama in the 1970s and 1980s at the Romanian Pavilion. He loved animals and a good laugh. Dad was a kind, gentle man who always had a smile on his face and a twinkle in his eye. On Thursday, May 31, 2012 Nick's Funeral Service will be held at 10:30 a.m. in St. Demetrios Romanian Orthodox Church, 103 Furby St., Winnipeg with Rev. Fr. Victor Malanca presiding. Interment will follow in Brookside Cemetery, 3001 Notre Dame Avenue. The family wishes to thank Dr. Kevin Coates and the staff of St. Boniface Hospital 6A South for their great care and compassion. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba, CancerCare Manitoba, or The Winnipeg Humane Society. Thinking of the thoughtful things, that you have said and done, and loving you a little more, Dear Dad, for each and every one.
