IDO VAN DEN BROEK Born May 29, 1931, in Arnhem, Holland, this middle child of three began playing music on a vacuum cleaner hose at age six. At 17 he began working as a typesetter for the local paper, then immigrated to Canada with other Dutch musicians to bolster Canada's military bands. He was an accomplished fixer of a multitude of things (F.O.O.S.). He loved; a good joke, hard core S.F., RC. Planes, gigging, ballistics, making rocket motors from scratch and testing them, camping, nature and above all his family, with whom he took every opportunity to spend time at the lake. Dad left us on May 19, 2012: Bob, Jan (Ian), Sue, Hanny, Jan Willem, Ben, Adrienne, Erin, Denny, Delia, Maureen, Daniel, Vagn Jr. and Lisa. He is now at the camp spot, with Mom and the Pink Lady. As expressions of sympathy, if friends so wish, donations may be made in Ido's memory to Prairie Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre Box 48059 RPO Lakewood Winnipeg, MB R2J 4A3. A tree will be planted in memory and cared for by McKenzies Portage Funeral Chapel 857-4021 A message can be left in the on-line guest book at www.mckenziesportagefuneralchapel.com

Prachtige jaren Ido. Ik neem ze mee als ik ga... Ab van der Horst - Posted by: Ab van der Horst (Jeugdvriend in Arnhem - Nederland) on: Dec 13, 2020

  • Having known Ido's son Bob for a very long time and knowing his two daughters as well, there were so many inspiring stories of their childhood that I heard over the years. Ido certainly didn't take life for granted, having been through some amazingly trying times with his family in Holland during WWII. So with that, he seemed to try to live life to the fullest with his family. Ido loved to camp with the family (in the middle of nowhere, with no luxury of a store nearby but with the whole family (including cats, dogs, horses...) and Bob has told me stories about those times and how much fun they all had. He had a great philosophy of life and Bob passed that on to me, which I was lucky to have. Rest in peace Ido. You will be in everyone's hearts who had the pleasure of knowing you. - Posted by: Sherree Vickers (Friend) on: May 28, 2012

  • Sorry to hear that he's gone. We spent many good years together in the Air Command Band in the early 70's. On the road touring together and then when we came home Ido and Doreen lived right next door. As young guys in the band, they both kept track of what we were up to and talked us out of a couple of hair brained schemes. He will be missed but is now in a far better place. Sincere condolences to Bobby, Sue and Jan. Take care old friend, we will meet again. - Posted by: John Wills (musician, friend, and next door neighbour ) on: May 26, 2012
