TERRY CARMICHAEL August 9, 1935 - May 26, 2012 Our beloved Husband, Father, Grandfather, Uncle, Insurance Agent, Lake Captain, Singer and Dear Friend left us much swifter than imagined on Saturday, May 26, 2012, after a challenging battle with cancer. George Terence Carmichael is survived by his loving wife Loraine, of 50 years (less two months) and his loving sons Duncan and Ian (Stephanie) Carmichael and two cherished grandchildren Alexis and Andrew; mother-in-law Anne Keith; sisters-in-law: Janice (Doug) Burke; Lynn (Jack) Zuidervaart; Leslie (Larry) Johnson; Shari (Duane) Mombourquette; Marian Carmichael; brother-in-law Grant (Kym) Keith. Terry is also survived by his nephews: Glenn (Sean) McEown, Andrew (Pavi) McEown; Bruce (Kim) Carmichael, Rowan (Cindy) Carmichael; and numerous nieces and nephews. Terry was predeceased by his father George (Dode) Carmichael and mother May Carmichael; sister Nancy (Bruce) McEown; brother Dixon Carmichael; father-in-law Jack Keith; brother-in-law Myr Harvey; and nephew Duncan McEown. Terry was born and raised in Kenora where he attended North Ward School, and Kenora District High School. He enjoyed recalling colorful stories about his childhood which entertained family and friends over the years. He enjoyed football, basketball, curling, playing pool, chess and singing during his school years. Terry began his working career with Household Finance in Flin Flon. He then started his long career in the General Insurance business at Osler Hammond and Nanton and John A. Flanders, retiring from Flanders Insurance Services after 35 years of loyal service in 1999. He was well liked and respected by his industry peers. Terry was a past member of the Winnipeg Rotary Club and the St. James Kiwanis Club. Upon retirement he and his wife Loraine moved to beautiful Lake of the Woods where they had spent many summers at the family camp and loved boating, swimming, and living with nature at Carmichael Point. They built a new retirement home at Carmichael Point near Kenora and quickly became involved in the musical life of Terry's home town. Terry loved singing and missed his Winnipeg Barber Shop chorus. He joined the Kenora Guys Gals chorus; he formed a quartet and started a mens singing group called the Fifth Avenue Singers. He was an active member of the United Church in Winnipeg and Knox United Church in Kenora serving as Chairman of the Board at Knox. Terry was a perfectionist and a meticulous organizer. He was a dedicated hard worker and a community minded volunteer. Terry had a great sense of humour which continued through his long illness. He was a self described simple tradesman when his trade was honour and dignity in everything he did. Terry was a true gentleman, a loving husband, a wonderful father and grandfather, and a true friend who will be missed by all who knew him. His life was well lived. A celebration of Terry's life will be held at Knox United Church in Kenora on Sunday, June 3, 2012, at 2:00 p.m. at 116 Second Street South, Kenora, Ontario. Many thanks to St. Boniface CancerCare (Dr. C Moltzan); Dr. Jillie Retson, Dr. Mandy Spencer, Dr. Jim Beveridge and the Chemo team (Kim, Carolyn, Holly and Tina) in Kenora, Lake of the Woods Emergency Department and the staff on 3E Lake of the Woods District Hospital for excellent medical care over the past two years. Donations in Terry's memory may be made to Knox United Church Memorial Fund, 116 Second Street South, Kenora, Ontario P9N 2A2; 807-468-6923. It's hard to believe you're really gone and to know we will no longer see your smiling face or hear the sound of your laughter. You left us with so many memories and you will always live deep within our hearts. Arrangements are entrusted to Brown Funeral Home 429 Second Street South, Kenora, Ontario P9N 1G7 Online condolences may be made at Brownfuneralhomekenora.com

Condolences & Memories (7 entries)

  • Hi Loraine and family - was surfing the 'net' today and for some reason a link appeared to Terry's Obituary. Sorry - we were unaware that Terry had passed away. Please accept our 'much delayed' message of sympathy. We will always remember Terry's enthusiasm for life. We pray you have adjusted to your 'new normal' life without Terry. Blessings from Our House to Yours - Your Yorkton Cousins - Posted by: Art & Gwen Just (Cousins to Loraine) on: Nov 04, 2013

  • Loraine and family What a wonderful tribute to Terry and I am so sorry for your loss at this time. A thought I read once, "two things stand like stone, kindness in another's troubles, courage in your own". It seems you and Terry lived both. Take care and do the best you can for yourselves this next while. - Posted by: Joyce Thomas (classmate) on: Jun 02, 2012

  • We spent many Wednesday evenings with the Golden Chordsmen singing and generally having just a fine time. Terry was always around and much loved by everyone in the Barbershop chorus. We missed him when he retired to Kenora but were always happy when he and Loraine came into Winnipeg for a Barbershop function. Condolences to the family from John and Mary Latham. - Posted by: John Latham (Fellow Baritone with the Wpg Golden Chordsmen) on: Jun 02, 2012

  • Lorraine, i think of your early days with Terry, and how much and deeply you cared for him. I guess nothing changed much over the years because here we are some 50 years later, and the caring and love obviously has continued. I think of you so fondly and extend my sympathy to you in this monumental loss. Iam there in spirit on Sunday. Love Chib - Posted by: Chib and Richard Melnyk (friend) on: Jun 01, 2012

  • Jeff & I were saddened to hear of Terry's passing. Our condolences go out to Loraine & the entire Carmichael family. Both Terry & Dixon were such gentle men. Now they are both angels. - Posted by: Sarah/ Jeff Leighton (Step family) on: Jun 01, 2012

  • Remenbered as a true gentleman and a great family man! - Posted by: Gil Desrosiers (Friend) on: May 31, 2012

  • Death leaves a heartache no one can heal, love leaves a memory no one can steal. Our thoughts and prayers are with you at this time. We treasure the time Sharon, Christian and Carly had with Terry at Lake of the Woods and we all had with him in Edmonton during the time of Dixon's service. His tribute to Dixon in Edmonton demonstrated his inner strength at a very difficult time. Our love, Ross, Sharon, Christian and Carly Manning - Posted by: Ross, Sharon, Christian and Carly Manning (Honoured to be connected as family through Dixon and Marian Carmichael's union) on: May 31, 2012
