KATERYNA BLASCHUK Kateryna Blaschuk of Edmonton, Alberta and formerly of Winnipeg, Manitoba passed away peacefully at the age of 89 years on May 23, 2012. Kateryna is survived by her two beloved children Roma and Orest, as well as her five grandchildren Sofia, Matthew, Dylan, Lauren and Danielle. She was predeceased by her husband, William in 1989. Kateryna was born in Kamnianka Stromylova, Western Ukraine and then forced to leave home in her late teens during the Second World War. She met and married William Blaschuk in Germany in 1948. They immigrated to Canada after the Second World War, settling in Winnipeg to start a new life and raise a family. The well-being of Kateryna's family was always of primary importance. She and her husband ensured that their children had a secure future before them, emphasizing higher learning as a key for them. Kateryna also became well-known to the friends of her children for her caring attitude, terrific cooking, treats and sense of humour. Kateryna lived in Armstrong's Point, Winnipeg for most of her life. She was a warm and friendly neighbour, always providing a ready supply of delicious tomatoes and cucumbers from her garden. Kateryna enjoyed her time meeting for lunch or coffee with Mrs. Crawford and Dirks as Golden Girls . Kateryna moved to Edmonton in 2006 to be closer to her daughter, Roma. She remained there until her death. Kateryna was known for her friendly disposition and smile to the careproviders at the Good Samaritan Southgate Care Centre. Kateryna's accomplishments in her life were local, but her presence in this world made it a better place, touching the hearts of one person at a time. The family would like to thank the staff and pastoral care at the Good Samaritan Southgate Care Centre in Edmonton for their care and support of Kateryna. Prayers will be held at the Korban Funeral Chapel in Winnipeg, Manitoba on Monday, June 4, 2012 at 7:00 p.m. with Divine Liturgy at St. Vladimir and Olga Cathedral in Winnipeg, Manitoba on Tuesday, June 5, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow at the Holy Family Cemetery, Winnipeg, Manitoba. In lieu of other tributes, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Alberta, NWT Nunavut, 10985 - 124 Street NW, Edmonton, AB T5M 0H9.
