GEORGE WILLIAM (BILL) NICKERSON
Born: Oct 05, 1935
Date of Passing: May 29, 2012
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryGEORGE WILLIAM (BILL) NICKERSON October 5, 1935 - May 29, 2012 A good man has passed from the earth and we will truly miss him: his wife and life-partner of 53 years, Sylvia; daughter Sandra; son Peter (Vivienne); grandchildren Laura (Craig), Graeme (Sarah) and Emily; great-granddaughter Noƫlle; brother Eric (Lynn), and nieces and nephews of Nova Scotia. Dad was born a Herring-choker in Saint John, New Brunswick and became an adopted Blue-noser when his parents returned to Nova Scotia to work the family farm in the Annapolis Valley where he lived until age 19, when he left to take up an Electrician apprenticeship with the Department of Defense in the Naval dockyards in Halifax. He went on to earn a degree in Electrical Engineering at Acadia University and Nova Scotia Technical College. His career took Dad and his young family west: first to Brampton, then to Ottawa, and eventually to Winnipeg in 1980 where he retired from Northern Telecom in 1996. Around this time, Bill was diagnosed with Parkinson's, which he valiantly endeavored to live with, striving to maintain a full and active life. Dad was a classic family man, devoted to his wife and children and later doted on his grandchildren, of whom he was very proud. Dad loved the outdoors and exploring new places both in person, and vicariously through Amateur radio as VE4DL making ham radio contacts around the world. He was also active in the life of Broadway-First Baptist Church, especially the Men of Broadway group. A kind and gentle man, Dad was fun-loving and strove for excellence in all that he undertook - not surprisingly, given his role as a Quality Manager for Northern Telecom. The Movement Disorder Clinic at Deer Lodge Hospital helped Dad to manage the impact of Parkinson's and the staff there were instrumental in enabling him to cope and lead an active life. Dad received exceptional, professional and sympathetic care throughout his five-month hospitalization. Very many thanks and much appreciation is extended to the numerous compassionate unit assistants, nurses and physicians on H4 at the Health Sciences Centre, who cared for Dad with such respect and concern. A memorial and celebration of Dad's life is to be held Tuesday, June 5, 2012 at 10:30 a.m. at Broadway-First Baptist Church, 790 Honeyman Avenue. In lieu of flowers the family would appreciate donations to the Parkinson Society of Canada (www.parkinson.ca). For those who wish to sign the online Guest Book please visit our website. Our condolences. I remember Bill to be a man of principle, of gentleness, and of compassion. He always had something positive to say about everyone. Even though its been a good number of years since we worked together, I know that anyone who worked with Bill will remember him fondly as we do. Farewell Bill! - Posted by: Bob and Brenda Yamashita (Bob worked with Bil' at Nortel's plant from "85-'90) on: Jun 02, 2012
