MARY KING Our dear mother, Mary Cornelia King, passed away on June 1, 2012, surrounded by her loving family. Mom was born on December 26, 1921 in London, England. The daughter of Laura Louise Stocker and Alfred Edward Fairbrother, she was predeceased by her sisters Louise and Grace and her brother Ted. On September 1, 1943, Charles F. King, a Canadian soldier on leave in London, spied Mary from the balcony of the Covent Garden Opera House and it was love at first sight. They were married on April 18, 1945 and in the spring of 1946, Mom crossed the Atlantic on the S.S. Scythia, one of the first fleet of British War Brides to arrive in Canada. Mary and Charlie crisscrossed their way across the prairies, residing in small railway communities throughout Saskatchewan, Alberta and Manitoba. In 1959, they permanently settled in a home on Somerville Avenue in Winnipeg. Mary and Charlie raised two sons, David and Roger, instilling a strong sense of community spirit in their boys and a love for the wide-open prairies. Mom was an inspiration in every sense of the word, with an unfailing sense of loyalty and dependability. An unflappable hostess and outstanding cook, her home-made bread and cookies were legendary Saturday morning treats. As a mother and grandmother, she was immensely proud of the accomplishments of all of her family and eagerly attended every performance, concert, and sporting activity. Mom had a deep faith and was an active member of All Saints' Anglican Church for over 50 years. She was a staunch believer in the value of a good education. When her sons completed their schooling, she re-entered the workforce and worked closely with the deans of the Faculty of Pharmacy at the University of Manitoba. Mom had a positive and optimistic outlook on life and epitomized the word adventurer . Sharing a love founded on honesty and mutual respect, Mom and Dad were a shining example to their family of the real meaning of true love. She and Dad travelled to almost all corners of the world. Mom loved her adopted country of Canada and always marvelled at the beauty of the land. When she and Dad retired, they spent three years living in Costa Rica where Mom drove through the jungles on a daily basis while Dad rehabilitated the railroad lines for the country's banana plantations. After she lost her beloved Charlie in 1988, Mom focused on keeping his legacy alive through her writing and stories. Mom spent the last few months at the Calvary Place Personal Care Home and the family wishes to sincerely thank all of the staff for their many kindnesses, caring and compassion. Mom leaves to mourn her sons David (Barbara) and Roger (Alexandra). Her grandchildren, Matthew (Nicole), Eric (Jamie), Adam and Diana will always remember their Grandma's wonderful English sense of humour and her witty sayings. In 2001, Adam and Grandma travelled back to England together where their bond flourished, sustaining wonderful happy memories of their special time together. A memorial service for Mary will be held on Saturday, June 9 at 10:30 a.m. at All Saints' Anglican Church at the corner of Broadway and Osborne. A reception will follow the service at the home of David and Barbara King for all family, friends and colleagues. In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire, donations may be made to All Saints' Anglican Church at 175 Colony Street, Winnipeg, Manitoba R3C 1W2 or to the CancerCare Manitoba Foundation at 1160 - 675 McDermot Avenue, Winnipeg, Manitoba R3E 0E9.

Condolences & Memories (1 entries)

  • Roger and David and families - I am late in sending my deepest sympathy for the passing of your Mom. Thanks to my nephew, Mark McLellan (who carries on the family tradition of carrying the crossing for the choir processional and a member of the All Saint's choir) I discovered upon returning from a Baltic Cruise with my wife, Leslie, your mom's obituary. I have many, many fond memories of being associated with you and your Mom and Dad. I remember Mary's radiant smile; dry, and witty sense of humour; and her warm reception when I visited your home on Somerville. Her dedication and affection with All Saint's especially the then all male choir will always be with me especially since she became a close friend of my mom, Kathleen. We have made a contribution to Cancer Care Manitoba in memory of a very special person. We hope the passage of time eases the pain of your loss knowing you have many powerful reminders of all that she stood for and gave to her two very special sons. All the best Colin, Leslie, Jared and Kaitlyn Holbrow Toronto, ON - Posted by: Colin Holbrow (Friend from the past days of All Saint's Choir) on: Jul 22, 2012
