Born: Aug 07, 1920
Date of Passing: May 30, 2012
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryALBERT STANLEY (STAN) HANSON August 7, 1920 - May 30, 2012 Sadly, but peacefully on May 30, 2012 Stan Hanson passed away at home close to his family after a brief illness. He was born August 7, 1920 to parents Hans and Anna Hanson, the fifth of six children. He grew up in the Brooklands area of Winnipeg and loved to talk about the days of his youth when he enjoyed playing hockey in the winters and went to work on his uncle's farm near Swan River many summers. After graduating from high school he began working at United Refrigerator Parts where he started in the office and went on to become an owner with partner Ron Hall until his retirement. He joined the R.C.A.F. in the early 1940s as an aircraft mechanic and served overseas in England, Holland, Belgium and Germany in the Second World War. He was very proud to have served his country. After returning home he married Eleanor Parnitzky in 1948. They raised their two children, Janice and Bruce in their home on Downing Street and enjoyed many years of wonderful family experiences including family vacations to Mexico, Hawaii, California, Florida, Barbados and Antigua. In the early years they spent summer weekends at the cottage at Lake Brereton that his father had built. Then in the early 1960s he built a cottage at Twin Beaches where he and Eleanor spent many summers with their children, grandchildren and friends. Stan loved the outdoors - the lake, fishing and duck hunting. He took flying lessons, earned his pilot's license and bought a small Cessna sea plane which he loved to fly into many Manitoba lakes to go fishing. He also enjoyed hockey and spent many winters coaching in Weston with his brother Ralph. Stan and Eleanor also enjoyed travel to England, Norway, Germany, Spain, New Zealand and numerous other destinations with their friends, most frequently Brownie and Mona Bradshaw, Del and Vi Bradshaw, and Eleanor's mother Gran-gran . They often rented a mini van and called themselves the Group of Seven as they toured around the countryside. In the late 1970s Stan and Eleanor started spending several weeks each winter in Florida and soon bought a home in Pinellas Park. They wintered there over 15 years where they became very involved in square dancing, line dancing, golf and various other community activities. Many lasting friendships were made during those years. After selling the Florida residence they were back in Winnipeg for the cold winters. They kept warm by line dancing at the #4 Legion three times a week for the last 20 years up until mid March this year, even teaching many of the classes up until a year ago. He was very supportive of the Legion and a proud Veteran. Stan had a great sense of humour and was always a kind and considerate person who would help anyone at any time. He could fix anything that broke and always seemed to find that odd thing you needed somewhere in his garage. He enjoyed spending time in his garden growing flowers and vegetables that he shared with everyone, downloading music onto CD's for his line dancing classes, and puttering in his garage. He was extremely proud of everything his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren did and always supported them in all their interests and endeavors. In his last year he especially loved to watch his great-grandson Tyler play hockey and went to almost every game in the season. He will be sadly missed by his wife Eleanor, children Janice (Jim) Tennant and Bruce (Deb) Hanson, grandchildren Trevor (Michaela) Tennant, Meredith Thoendel, Melissa Tennant, Cori (Dan) Hanson, Julia Hanson, and great-grandchildren Annika and Silver Tennant, Tyler, Taya and Chase Thoendel, and also numerous nieces and nephews whom he loved. Our sincere appreciation to Dr. Stephen Grass for his great care of dad for the past several years, also to Louise and the nurses in the Palliative Care program, the Veteran's Affairs staff, Comforts of Home, and Joel, Henry, Clyde and all the other health care workers who took such good care of him, allowing him to pass away at home as he wanted. A Celebration of Stan's life will be held at the Western Canadian Aviation Museum on Thursday, June 7 from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. (958 Ferry Road - drive to the end of Ellice Avenue, turn right and go all the way to the end). In lieu of flowers, donations will be gratefully received by the Military Family Resource Centre, 102 Comet St., Box 17000 Stn. Forces, Winnipeg, MB R3J 3Y5, which supports the families of Canadian soldiers serving our country. NEIL BARDAL FUNERAL CENTRE (204) 949-2200 www.nbardal.mb.ca

Wow I can't believe it's coming up to a year. It seems like only yesterday I could come to you to fix anything. I have missed you terribly this last year. You are a man that stood by his family through thick and thin. Not a day goes by that I don't think of you. The giant zucchinis or crib games or the dog houses you built for my Jessie Girl.. miss you always.. Love Melissa - Posted by: Melissa Tennant (Grandaughter ) on: May 22, 2013

On behalf of my father and myself we were better people knowing Stan Hanson, the stories told by my father about the Hansons and the times they had when they were young still live with me, I cannot ever forget how well we were treated when we were at their house or at the the lake on our visits to Winnipeg in the sixties, My father has pictures hanging on the wall in his nursing home of Stan, Eleanor, Ralph, Slyvia and the rest of the gang and still comments on the times they had, a truly great generation - Posted by: Brian Elidoros (son Theo Elidoros one of Stans old friends ) on: Jun 10, 2012

Stan Hanson was one of the kindest and most down to earth men I have had the joy to know. When we went to Winnipeg years ago when I was a kid, the Hanson's put us up at their house on Downing and on Laidlaw. Most of my happy memories in childhood were those of when I was spending time at the cottage and with Stan and Eleanor. I will miss him. The distance may have separated us from our extended family in Winnipeg, but Uncle Stan has always made me feel a part of the Hanson clan and I have so appreciated that. I will always remember him for his great love of his family, for his amazing life achievements accompanied by a gentle humility - and of course for his warm smile and cheeky grin. Much love and condolences to my 'cousins' who I know will sorely miss this wonderful man. - Posted by: Kathy Stuart (Great-niece) on: Jun 05, 2012

We are so thankful to have had Mr. Hanson in our lives...he was a great friend to Mum & Dad and after Dad's passing went out of his way to assist Mum with so many things....it is all so very much appreciated....I remember having Uncle Brownies' birthdays out at Lake Manitoba....was always a thrill to swim in the "big" waves out there. - Posted by: Deborah Bradshaw (Daughter of Dal & Vi Bradshaw) on: Jun 04, 2012

Stan was a great boss! He was always very polite to all his staff, but especially to the ladies in the office. He was a true gentleman and a pleasure to work for. My condolences to the family. - Posted by: Susan Warkentin (Employee at United Refrigerator Parts 1966-1968) on: Jun 03, 2012

Stanley, well I feel fortunate that I knew this gentleman for years and years, and all through Line dancing. He was teaching me how to dance, along with Eleanor. He was always there no matter what I need. To give me a ride, to take me dancing, to teach me how, always with a smile on his face, always ready to say something real nice. I will miss him a lot. THE greatest Man I have ever known. Our deepest simpathy to Stan's family. - Posted by: BO AND DOUG ASHMORE (Texas friends) (FRIENDS) on: Jun 03, 2012
