LESLIE FEW April 12, 1915 - May 29, 2012 The family of Leslie Few sadly announce his passing at Seven Oaks Hospital, at the age of 97, on Tuesday, May 29, 2012. He was married in July 1936 to Frances Lorna Hallett, who predeceased him in 1979. He is survived by his daughters, Roberta Pearson, Cheryl Healey (John), and grandchildren Catherine D'Andrea (Giuseppe and Michele) and Andrew Kmet. Leslie was born in Sandiacre, Nottingham, England on April 12, 1915, one of eight children. His father Charles was a master builder, and so Leslie and several of his brothers went into the construction business also. During the Second World War, he was seconded to the Royal Engineers and served in Kenya, supervising hangers for R.C.A.F. planes and training local militia. Since he was not in a fighting zone, when the war ended in 1945, he did not return home until early 1947. He joined the construction firm of Racy McCallum, who, in May 1956, sent him to Canada, specifically to North Bay, Ontario to oversee work on the Distant Early Warning (DEW Line) System. Construction took him, over the next few years, to many parts of the country. In 1964, he joined Shokbeton (Netherlands) LLP. to work on the Olympic stadium in Montreal for the 1976 Olympics. He then moved to Winnipeg to supervise construction of the Richardson Building, Board of Grain Commissioners and several apartment blocks. The Olympic contract was directly responsible for his commission with Rod Robbie Architects Ltd., to plan, develop and supervise the building of the SkyDome in Toronto. This project became a personal favourite. He retired in Toronto but moved to Winnipeg three years ago, to be closer to family. Several months ago, he was thrilled to receive a phone call from Michael Pinball Clemons, former quarterback of the Toronto Argonauts, his favourite football team. His family would like to express their gratitude to the Maples Personal Care Home for their excellent care of our father this past eight months. If friends so desire, his family would appreciate donations to CancerCare Manitoba, 675 McDermot Ave., Winnipeg, MB R3E 0V9 in his memory. A private family service will be held at a later date.
