Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryWILLIAM ROY (BILL) SHUNK William Roy Bill Shunk, 91, passed away May 23, 2012 at John Knox Village in Weslaco, TX. He was born September 6, 1920 in Gilbert Plains, Manitoba, Canada to Jacob Wesley and Mary Edith Cason Shunk. He graduated Valedictorian of his class and received various awards including the distinguished alumnus award from Winnipeg Bible College and the Teaching Excellence Award from the University of Texas. After completing his B.A. and M.A. at Wheaton College, he graduated from Faith Theological Seminary and earned his Doctorates at both Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary and the University of Texas. Bill became a naturalized citizen in 1944. He was a member of Kappa Delta Pi and Phi Delta Kappa. He went on to teach at the National Bible Institute from 1945 to 1948, Wheaton College from 1948 to 1956, the University of Texas from 1959 to 1961 and after 25 years of faithful service, he retired from Purdue University where he taught from 1961 to 1986. Bill also pastored in Illinois, Maryland and New York from 1941 to 1955, was Interim Pastor in central Indiana from 1961 to 1986 and averaged over 40 Sundays per year for 25 years. He was also Pastor of Victoria Palms Community Church in Donna from 1991 to 1999 and various churches in the Valley. Some of Bill's interests included reading, traveling and spending time with his family. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his twin brother George Shunk, brother, Peary Shunk and sister, Beatrice Wiebe. He is survived by his loving wife, Anatole Nat Morrison Shunk of Weslaco; his children, David (Laurel) Shunk of Prescott, AZ, Mitzie (Mike) Jennewein of Cape Girardeau, MO, John (Anna) Shunk of Muncie, IN and Jim (Nedra) Shunk of Santa Clara, CA. Also surviving are his sister, Florence Tomlinson-Williams of Stonewall, Manitoba; a brother, Walter Shunk of California; eight grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. If friends so desire, memorial donations may be made to the Mid Valley Gideon Camp, P.O. Box 710, Weslaco, TX 78599-0710. A memorial service will be held today, Saturday, June 2, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. at John Knox Village in Weslaco, TX. Arrangements are under the direction of McCaleb Funeral Home, 900 W. 4th St., Weslaco, TX 78596.
