ANNE YAKEMOW (nee MELNYK) It is with great sorrow that we announce the peaceful passing of Anne Yakemow on Saturday, June 2, 2012 at the age of 82 years. She is survived by her children Alex (Darryl) Pokrant, Diana Dubeski and grandchildren Olivia, John and Emma, Cora (Ross) Campbell and grandchildren Anne and Katie, Byron (Pam) Yakemow and grandchildren Gabriella and Lucas, brother Rev. John (Sonia) Melnyk, sisters-in-law Nettie Melnyk, Helen Yakimiw and Nelle Bereza and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Bill and brothers Dan Melnyk, Harry and wife Ada Melnyk. Anne was born in the heart of The Depression in Fraserwood, MB and soon learned the value of a hard work ethic. After school, she became a teacher and eventually moved to Winnipeg where she worked various jobs until she retired at the age of 70 after 24 years of perfect attendance at Canada Post. Anne met Bill and they were married in the winter of 1959. Together they raised a family and Mom instilled her values of hard work, a good education and love of family to her children. Anne was an excellent seamstress and she had a great passion for gardening and cooking. Her recipe collection was second to none. Grandchildren were Anne's pride and joy and whether making buns, waffles, ginger-snaps or caramel popcorn, Baba's food was always a hit. Time spent with family was always a joy for Anne and although she was usually found working hard in the kitchen, Mom was always proud of her children and grandchildren and all their accomplishments. Anne was proud of her Melnyk and Ukrainian heritage and the early years spent at the homestead in Fraserwood were never far from her thoughts. Mom also loved cats and she had many happy days with Rusty on Marsden Street and in the latter years, Dolly was a constant companion who watched after Mom as Parkinson's and dementia slowed her down. The family wishes to thank the staff of Middlechurch Nursing Home who watched over Mom for the last five months. Their care and dedication were a blessing during Mom's last days. Funeral services will be held at Glen Eden Funeral Home on Wednesday, June 6 at 10:00 a.m. with Rt. Rev. Michael Skrumeda and Deacon Gordon Mendres presiding. Viewing will be one half hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, donations in Anne's memory may be made to the Alzheimer's Society of Manitoba.
