JOSEPH BAKO On June 3, 2012, Joe Bako passed away at the age of 86, surrounded by his family. Despite the hardships growing up in Hungary, three and a half years in a Russian prison camp, and numerous health problems over the years, Joe loved and appreciated life. He enjoyed the simple things - gardening, great friends, sharing a good meal, wine and most of all, his family. Joe is survived by his wife of 45 years, Sheila, and his daughter, Lisa, and her husband, Mike. In later years, the main joy in Joe's life were his two grandchildren, Sophia and Aidan. Joe was one of seven children, and the last surviving member of his immediate family. He enjoyed regular contact with his niece Marike and nephew Laci in Hungary, and loved keeping up on the news of the rest of the family overseas. His strength, love and devotion to his family are still alive even after his passing. He will be loved and missed forever. His family would like to thank Dr. Prodan, Dr. Aoki and the staff at Health Sciences Centre GD4, as well as the Palliative Care Team at St. Boniface Hospital. The family has also been overwhelmed by the outpouring of support from so many wonderful friends. Your kindness will never be forgotten. A private interment has taken place at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home.

Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • I am very sorry to learn of his death. I just lost my father today, Ted Elidoros, who died in his sleep this morning. My condolences to Sheila, Lisa and Mike, however belated this message is. I wish I had known a year ago. - Posted by: Karen Robertson (Elidoros) (Through Sheila Bako (second cousin)) on: Jun 17, 2013

  • I have known Mr. Bako (or Uncle Joe) my entire 34 years and I have so many memories of him from a very young age. Whenever I see apple trees or seesaws I think of the Bako back yard in River Heights :) The front of my two most cherished sticker books had large crests adorning the covers (City of Winnipeg I think) that I still remember receiving from Uncle Joe. I remember Uncle Joe pulling a loose tooth of mine when I was quite young..he tricked me into letting him take a look at it and then gave it a good yank...which means I must have trusted him if I let him anywhere near it :) I will always remember countless Christmas Eves with the Bako family, so many laughs, and Uncle Joe in his Big Green king chair. I always had a great admiration for Uncle Joe and as I got older I saw a sense of genuineness and kindness that you don't find in everyone. When he sat beside you and asked you how you were doing he was sincerely interested. My love, thoughts and prayers are with Mrs Bako, Lisa, Mike and the kids right now. I know his spirit and memory will live on and be with all of us at every gathering :) Lots of love from Toronto. - Posted by: Cheryl (family ) on: Jun 11, 2012
