IAN ELKIN Ian peacefully passed away on June 8, 2012 at St. Boniface Hospital surrounded by his loved ones. Ian was born in Winnipeg in 1947 and lived in River Heights where he grew up with his life-long friends Lorne Colish and Robert Carr. He graduated from Grant Park High School and then went to the University of Manitoba graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in History. While in university he took up photography as a hobby, but in 1973 he got his hands on a 16mm movie camera and his life changed. He became passionate about shooting film and managed to turn an Opportunity for Youth Grant into his first film, PROFITS AND THE PUCK. Ian then went on to work as a documentary cameraman, travelling the world for the CBC and the NFB and eventually became an award-winning cinematographer for films such as THE LAST WINTER, LOST IN THE BARRENS, and FOR THE MOMENT. Ian loved being at the Willow Island cottage in Gimli where every summer he strived, and often succeeded, in making the perfect burger. Ian leaves his two loving sons Ben and Will, whom he adored, their mother Norma Bailey; his brother Barry and sister-in-law Diane and their son Darren. The family wishes to thank Lorne Colish and Robert Carr for their devotion, kindness, and sense of humour, and the wonderful staff at St. Boniface Palliative Care for their kind and loving care during Ian's last days. In lieu of flowers, which Ian loved, donations can be made to a charity of your choice. Please join the family on Tuesday, June 12, 2012 anytime after 5:00 p.m. at 893 Dorchester Ave. to have a glass of scotch and celebrate his life. Chapel Lawn www.chapellawn.mb.ca 885-9715

  • when we were very young, Credo's live action was just unfolding atop the house on Sherbrook, with the scurry of animation production in the background, it is an instant recall to realize that then, I was introduced into what was then, one of first skeleton film crews that carved out Wpg's film making industry ... Derek, Ian, Leon and Frank would hump their gear and gak down the stairs into a truck, while Joan's voice was calling out last minute info, they'd fade from ear shot ... returning from the gig, we'd all pile upstairs and they would wildly replay the accountings of the day ... loads of laughing, tons of learning, this was a really charged growth ... charmed time of inventing ... to see Ian slowly draw his oversized hand down his signature beard in deep thought as simple but vivid flashbacks rush in easily ... for me, Ian's intense regard for most everything, his smooth wit, comedic antidotes, R&B, buddies, the beach life, and the other etc's we each know, forms my very fond appreciation for this truly kind man and as a soulfully complex artist ... Ian captured his images and relationships to create this ever lasting effect and authentic legacy ... I lament not having just one more scotch with you ... however, many will have one to you ... - Posted by: kim 4est (friend) on: Jun 12, 2012

  • In the house on Portage, and on the Assiniboine, Muddy Waters' Hoochie Coochie Man rocks. In the back yard are buried a succession of bull dogs, that belonged to the one time owner. I find Swick at the kitchen table, long fingers toying with a still camera. I Elkin? I ask Proud reply ... I ELKIN ! - Posted by: peter whiteford (friend) on: Jun 11, 2012

  • I have always considered myself to be blessed for having worked with Ian over the years as his assistant. His thoughtfulness and humour made even the most demanding days fun. His amazing patience made him a wonderful mentor and one of the best DOP's I have ever worked with. - Posted by: Holly Gregory (friend) on: Jun 10, 2012

  • Ian was the best Godfather I could have asked for. I majored in film at the U of M mostly because of him. I was always interested in his film pursuits and bragged about him every chance I got. He always had this calming nature about him that was very comforting. I will remember him most for his wise words and contagious smile and laugh. He will be forever missed and forever in my heart. - Posted by: Anne Colish (Goddaughter) on: Jun 09, 2012
