SAM MEYROWITZ Sam Meyrowitz (Meyers), aged 93, passed away peacefully with his wife at his side on May 31, 2012 at Seven Oaks Hospital. He will lovingly be remembered by his wife of 65 years, Cecile, his children, David (Irene), Arlene (Len), grandchildren Elana (Jon), Jesse, Ryan and Brett, his sister Hilda Steiman and his sister-in-law, Sylvia (Babe) Meyers, as well as nieces and nephews. Sam was born on August 19, 1918, the youngest child of four. He was predeceased by his parents, Louis (Lazer) and Kate (Gitel), his brother, Harry; his sister and brother-in-law, Ida and Harvey Smordin and his brother-in-law, Chilo Burko. He is survived by his sister-in-law, Bernice Burko and his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Albert and Rose (Cookie) Rutman. Sam was raised in Elmwood and attended Lord Selkirk School and St. John's Technical High School. It was a long, harsh winter walk from Martin and Watt to Salter Street! When he graduated from High School he worked for his brother who owned a Flour and Feed Store. During the war he was a Navigator in the R.C.A.F. He enlisted in 1942 and was discharged in 1945. Sam subsequently worked in the Garment Industry at Monarch Wear and Wescott Fashions. Sam enjoyed all sports. As a teen-ager he played Hockey with The Kildonan Bisons. In 1937 he was a member of the Morse Place Athletic Club Baseball Team. Golf was his passion and he was a member of Rossmere Country Club. He had memories of playing in a Pro-Am tournament. Moe Norman and partner Tom Johnson won and Sam and Elmhurst Pro, Joe Tachan were runner-up partners. Somehow, in between all his Sports activity, he found time to fall in love and marry Cecile in 1947. 65 years of sharing happy times and sad times. The joy of raising two wonderful children; the joy of four wonderful grand-children. Sam learned how to play Bridge and he and Cecile shared the excitement of Bridge competition at the Tuxedo Bridge Studio and tournaments in Winnipeg and the U.S. There were wonderful winter holidays in Hawaii, Aruba, Mexico, Las Vegas and on retirement, a memorable trip to Israel; finally wintering in Florida for many years. The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to Dr. Nolan Finlayson and Dr. Gordon Dalling for their care and compassion. A special thanks to Cory and the nurses and Aides from 5 unit 7 and 5 unit 5 at Seven Oaks Hospital, as well as the staff from the Emergency Department, who did their best to bring Sam comfort. A graveside service was held at the Shaarey Zedek Cemetery on Monday, June 4. Pallbearers were Len Gladstone, Ryan Gladstone, Brett Gladstone, Jesse Meyrowitz, Jon Waldman and Avi Waldman. In lieu of other tributes, donations may be made to the Jewish Foundation, The Friends of the Museum of Human Rights or a charity of your choice.
