HERBERT RICHARD ZILKE Warrant Office CD Ret. (RCARMY) (RCAF) Peacefully, after a lengthy illness, Herb (Herbie) Zilke died on Sunday, June 17, 2012, at Riverview Health Centre at age 89. He is survived by his wife Ruth, his children Victoria Larson (Keith), Barbara Roberts (Jim), Richard Zilke (Barbara), Grandchildren: Jonathan Miles (Jennifer), James Miles (Christine), Brett Roberts (Jennifer), Danielle Kachanoski (Vaughn), Angela Zilke, Laura Zilke, and Alex Zilke, and Great-grandchildren Jody-Anne, Jenson, Lucas, and Tyler. He was predeceased by his parents, Millie and Julius, his sister Emily, brothers Art and Lawrence. Herb was born in Winnipeg and lived as a young boy in Grahamdale, MB. His family bought a farm in Moosehorn, MB and Herb lived his youth working on the family farm, milking cows, herding cattle, feeding chickens, and plowing fields. Herb was a Veteran of the Second World War and was proud to serve Canada. He joined the Army in 1944 and after the Second World War worked at the Normal School as a cook. He joined the Canadian Air Force where he served for 26 years in Military Food Services. His military career included service in Canada, Europe, and Egypt, and honour with special medals such as France and Germany STAR, Special Service NATO, and UNEF. He retired from the military in 1973. The family thanks Veterans Affairs Canada for taking such good care of Dad in his advancing years. Herb had a love for music throughout his life. He entertained with his singing, guitar, and accordion at his residence at Kirchhoff Gardens and at the end the staff at Riverview enjoyed his singing. Thank you to the nurses and doctors on 3 West. Dad received wonderful care from all the medical staff at Riverview for his six-month stay. A special hug for Alice, sweetheart . A memorial service will be held at Faith Lutheran Church, 1311 Dakota St., on Sunday June 24, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Faith Lutheran Church or the Kidney Foundation. We love you Dad! Rest in peace.
