ROY ALEC VENESS It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Roy Alec Veness, who passed away on June 22, 2012. Roy was born on April 9, 1927, on a farm in Greenhill, near Edmonton, Alberta. He was the second youngest of five children born to Arnold and Louisa (nee Watson). Sadly, his mother died when Roy was still a child. Later, Arnold remarried to Thelma who gave Roy a half-brother, Ken. Roy left home when he was young, working in lumber yards, as a farm labourer, in factories, and truck driving. He moved to Toronto in 1948, where he met his wife Margaret and also joined the Army. Together, they had seven children, who Roy supported by working several part-time jobs. Roy has lived all over Canada in such places as Toronto, Kingston, Flin Flon, Ladysmith (on Vancouver Island), Penticton, and Winnipeg. He also found time to curl, square dance and become a diamond master bridge player. After his wife Margaret passed away in 1983, Roy met Marie Lisitza and spent 17 happily married years together until her death in 2007. Together, through their work in sales, Roy and Marie traveled continuously, visiting every province and state in North America. After Marie's passing, Roy left his home in British Columbia to return to Winnipeg, where he enjoyed spending time with his family and his many friends at Lion's Place, especially his special friend, Jessie Carlson. Roy was very sociable, and was always known to share a joke, sing his favourite songs, and offer a kind comment to everyone he met. He leaves to grieve, his brother Ken, his children, Allan, Nancy (Barron) Doug, Glen, Cori (Brown) Philip and Ken and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. A celebration of Roy's life will be held 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Tuesday, July 3, 2012, at Lion's Place, 610 Portage Ave. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Lions Place.
