Mike...you were one of the BEST! Your smile...your laugh...your story writing..will never be forgotten. You were always willing to help me when I needed it. I don't know who else will now go fishing with me during "first ice" when everyone else is too chicken ;) I will miss taking the pictures of your "Masters. You made catching them, look so easy! I remember the 1st day I met you....at an ice fishing derby no less :) I will miss you (and all your advice on catching my "Big One")! Condolences to Mary and the rest of your family. They are in my thoughts and prayers. Rest in Peace my friend....keep your lines tight up there! - Posted by: Rhonda Cook (Friend/ Fishing buddy) on: Jun 29, 2012

I only fished with Mike a few times. I remember him as the accompanying picture....a big smile ear to ear. A terrible thing his passing. Makes me think of my own mortality, Mike was 5 years my junior. I hope gods hands are cradling you as you meet people you loved from the past and patiently wait for us to join you when our time comes. RIP Mike - Posted by: Allan Chemerika (Friend) on: Jun 28, 2012

My deepest sympathies to Garry, Mary and the rest of Mike's Family. Ah Mike! What a journey you and I have been on! I first met Mike in Grade 7 at Valley Gardens Junior High. At that time we shared an interest in computers. As years progressed we hung out more and more, listened to the same music, talked a lot and became locker buddies in high school. One day my Mother asked me how I was enjoying my Granola bars in my lunch. I replied, "What Granola Bars?" Apparently every day for 1 month prior when you had a spare, you beat me to my lunch. I laughed and asked if they were good. You said, "Yes" and laughed with a guilty look on your face. After that my lunches were always a little bigger and we still remained friends. We got our driver's licenses @ 16 and by the time we were 17 we would skip school the odd time and head out to East Selkirk to fish for the day, both of us arriving home when school ended, books in hand. Your Dad once asked you why you smelled like salted minnows and fish. You told him we were dissecting in Science class that day. I don't think your Dad believed you, but he didn't pursue it at that time. Your Dad would drive us to Camp Neustadt and we'd stay at your Grandmothers place. Enjoying Summer, times @ the lake and having fun living life. We used to have a serious card game or 2 in your basement, calling in to the radio station to request some songs. We still saw each other, maybe once a year as our lives took different turns, but always remained friends. I am so sorry to see you go dear friend. My family was supposed to come out sooner to Neustadt but with work, plans had always been put on the back burner. We were/are going to come out for Kinderfest and I truly wish if I could could go back in time I would drop all plans and visit with you one more time. Take care good friend... you'll always be in my thoughts.... Till we meet again. - Posted by: Michael Hnatiuk (Friend) on: Jun 28, 2012

A better friend you could never ask for, that was Mike. I miss you already, I don't know what will happen when the water freezes over, Fir the first time in my life I am not looking forward to it. But I know you will be sitting there with other friends of mine, watching, and laughing every time one of my rare mishaps take place. Another fallen friend I will be looking up to the sky at, during my best and worst times. To Mary and the family, I am so sorry for your loss. It was extremely sad to hear about the untimely passing of Mike. He was an extremely likeable man and about as honest a man that one could ever hope to meet. His passion for angling was tremendously great. He excelled at ity and was one of the most productive ice fishers on the "BIG" lake as there ever was. We're gona miss your friendly smile Mike, however you will always remain in our thoughts. "May God Bless you" Sincere condolences from our home to Mike's wife & family members. - Posted by: Stu McKay (Friend) on: Jun 28, 2012

We first met at one of our monthly meetings at Walleye Anglers Association of Manitoba back in 2008. We shared stories and fished together at many of our club outings. It is with deep regret that we lost you so young and you were one of our best walleye anglers both on and off the ice. We will miss your stories and your smile. You brought joy to all around you. May you Rest In Peace dear friend and we will fish together once again on the other side. We send our sincere condolences to Mary Vermeer, family and friends.
