I was thinking about Mrs. Hopkins today as I participated in our church choir so I decided to try to find out what became of this very special lady. Mrs. Hopkins helped to instill in me a great love for music and singing when I was a young girl and living in Thompson, Manitoba. I auditioned for her and was invited to join the Thompson Select Choir - what an honor to be directed by Mrs. Hopkins. She put her heart and soul into our choir and we felt of her love and efforts to help us become better singers. And most importantly, we all had so much fun together - I will never forget her. - Posted by: Deborah Dillen Collingridge (Former student) on: Sep 27, 2015

When I was leaving the farm and looking for a home in Elm Creek, as soon as I saw Hazel's garden, sunroom and deck I didn't look at one place more I wanted Hazel's home, it was so beautiful. My husband Jim and I are so fortunate to enjoy all of Hazel's hard work. - Posted by: Marion Stangl Miller (Bought Hazel's house and garden in Elm Creek) on: Jul 18, 2012

She was my grade 8 teacher in RD Parker in Thompson. She was so full of energy and made learning fun. I always have fond memories of being in her class. She was a great teacher. - Posted by: Beverley Watson (Rogers) (student) on: Jul 10, 2012

Mrs. Hopkins inspired and cultivated my love for music! She believed in me and encouraged me to believe in myself! She gave me her time and ear and made me feel that I could accomplish the world. I will miss her smile and beautiful disposition the most. Our world just dimmed a little from her demise! - Posted by: Teresa Gibson (Former music student from Thompson, MB) on: Jul 10, 2012

Hazel left a great legacy to Thompson, Manitoba from where she moved several years ago upon retirement. She worked tirelessly and lobbied with determination to ensure that Thompson had a museum. Where others did not recognize that Thompson had any history, she saw a rich heritage from First Nations peoples, from the fur traders, and from fifty-plus years of mining from the discovery of nickel ore to the present. Hazel taught grade eight students at Deerwood School in the School District of Mystery Lake for many years and instilled awareness of the need to protect and respect the ecology of our planet throughout the school. She also chaired the Thompson Science Fair and was successful in bringing the Canada-Wide Science Fair to Thompson. Her love of music led her to begin a youth choir which she led for several years which gave enjoyment to the children and those who attended their performances. Hazel was a warm, friendly person who had drive and passion for everything she touched; a lovely lady who touched many people. Condolences to her family. - Posted by: Valerie Wilson (Friend from Thompson) on: Jul 09, 2012
