IRENE CURTIS May 11, 1926 - July 2, 2012 It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Irene on July 2, 2012 at the Grace Hospital after a brief illness. She will be missed by her son David (Sara) Brown, her stepson Larry (Pamela) Curtis, and their children and grandchildren, as well as by brothers Bernard (Doreen) Poniatowski and Edward (Lydia) Poniatowski, sister Stella McCaffrey, and many nieces and nephews. Irene had been predeceased by her husband Larry, parents Stanley and Eva Poniatowski, brother Chester Poniatowski, and sisters Sophie Kwiatkowski and Helen Bloski. Irene was born in Warsaw, Poland on May 11, 1926. At the age of six years, she immigrated to Canada with her family. She grew up on a farm near Porcupine Plain, Saskatchewan. As a young woman, Irene moved to Winnipeg where she worked as a seamstress in the garment industry for many years. For much of her later life she lived in at Westwood House in St. James, where she leaves many friends. Irene was known for her intelligence and humour as well as for standing by her convictions. She held a special place in her heart for small creatures and would often visit the pets at local veterinary hospitals. As per Irene's wishes, she has been cremated; no formal funeral service will take place. If family or friends so desire, a memorial donation may be made in her name to the Canadian Diabetes Association. The family wishes to express our sincere gratitude to the physicians, nurses and staff at Grace Hospital for the comfort and care provided to Irene in her last days.
