EVELYN LUCILLE RAMSAY
Date of Passing: Jul 07, 2012
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryEVELYN LUCILLE RAMSAY We are sad to announce that Evelyn Ramsay passed away peacefully on July 7, 2012 in her 97th year. Beloved wife of her late husband Robert, she will be lovingly missed by her children Robert (Norma), William (Glenda), Thomas (Cheryl), Brian (Rhonda), and David (Shiona), her daughter-in-law Lynn and her grandchildren Eric, David, Janelle (Derek and Phoenix), Darin, Tyson, Gavin (Allison), Lara, Margo, Andrew, Lauren, Matthew, Sam and Isaac. She was predeceased by a son James and a granddaughter Brooke who also loved her with all of their hearts. After being orphaned at the tender age of 10 years old, she was separated from her siblings and raised in her hometown of Superior, Wisconsin by the very caring Lang family. Following high school she headed for the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis to pursue nursing at the Miller Hospital where she ultimately met her future husband, who was undertaking medical training at the same hospital. The happy couple fell in love, married and moved to Winnipeg where they raised their family. Evelyn was the consummate wife and mother and she dedicated her life to her family. She will be remembered for her cookies. She will be remembered for her hugs and sloppy kisses. She will be remembered for her family stories which she often repeated to the delight of her boys. She will be remembered for the incredible love she had for her husband, who predeceased her by 32 years, yet was fondly remembered daily. She will be remembered for her fierce defence and support of her boys and for always insisting that she never regretted not having a daughter to raise. In her own words, she would have a "conniption fit" whenever someone lamented her fate of having six sons and no daughters. She will be remembered for never picking a favourite despite the numerous requests to declare one. The family would like to thank the wonderful nurses, aides, staff and doctors at St. Boniface Hospital who helped her through her final days. A Memorial Service to celebrate her life will be held at St. Andrew's River Heights United Church, 255 Oak St. at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 14, with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers donations in Evelyn's memory can be made to "Brooke's Donkey's" , a participant in The Relay for Life in support of The Canadian Cancer Society (http//brookesdonkeys.wordpress.com/donate/), to St. Andrew's River Heights United Church Foundation, 255 Oak St., R3M 3P7 or another charity of your choice.

In the 50s, my 4 brothers and I grew up across the street and a couple houses away from the Ramsays. In that one city block, there were over 30 children. We played together from dawn to dusk, day in and day out. Mrs. Ramsay (whom I was allowed to call Evelyn once I married) was ever-present, always inviting us in for cookies and milk, encouraging us all to "play nicely" together. In my adult years, she remained a friend as we took daily aquacise classes together, and went to many of the same parties. When I think of Evelyn, I think of a woman with incredible grace and patience. She was a great mentor for me. My best to all the boys and your families; I know my brothers send their best wishes and fond memories too. - Posted by: Linda (Leach) Radcliffe (friend) on: Aug 30, 2012

I only had the privilege of meeting Evelyn about ten years ago. I could see immediately what a remarkable woman she was - strong and confident, refined and loving. I am so thankful that we did meet and I so enjoyed and appreciated the Ramsay family history information and stories she shared with me. I know you will all miss her earthly presence but I also know you will take great comfort in the full life she lived and the unconditional love she gave. Please accept my heartfelt sympathy at this time. Sincerely, Judy Longpré - Regina, SK. - Posted by: Judy Longpré ((second cousin to Evelyn's sons - granddaugther of the late David Ramsay of Qu'Appelle, SK)) on: Jul 30, 2012

So sorry to hear of Evelyn's passing. My memories of her go way back to the date of her wedding to Bob. Some of us young boys gathered outside the Lang residence in Superior and banged on pots and pans to celebrate their wedding. She and Bob came outside and thanked us. What a classy lady then and throughout our relationship after Carolyn and I were married. She will be missed. Our prayers are with you all. - Posted by: Don Marg (Sister Carolyn's Husband) on: Jul 19, 2012

So sad to hear about Aunt Evelyn's passing away. What a dear and special lady she was to all of us! Loved all of her stories about Mom and Uncle Dale. I know my Mom's strength came from the strong women in her life and your dear Mom was one of them. It hurts to lose a parent - no matter the age we are when it happens. Hold fast to all the great memories you have of your Mom for they will see you thru the days ahead. She lives on in all the stories you share about her. And you know she's telling a few of her own up in heaven right now! Love Lauren - Posted by: Lauren Marg (Cousin) on: Jul 18, 2012

Evelyn was ten years old when she came to live with my parents, six years before I was born, and eight years before the birth of my little sister Carolyn. As an older "sister" and a teenager, she must have played a major role in our formative years. I have vivid memories of her college years when she would return home for summer and holiday vacations with us. Those homecomings were always a joyful occasion for the whole family. She devoted a lot of time to me, always steering and counseling me in the right direction. I like to think she learned how to raise a son by practicing on me. Judging from her later success at raising six of her own, she not only became an expert at the task, but she also became the most loving and respected woman any of us have ever known. We will miss her dearly. Dale - Posted by: Dale W Lang () on: Jul 17, 2012

I wa so saddened to hear of the passing of Aunt Evelyn. I have nothing but fond and happy memories of her over many years. I especially remember visits to the cabin on Lake Winnipeg with the family. Due to geography, our paths did not cross often in recent years, but it was always a pleasure to see her and we will all miss her. Our best to the family in your time of sadness. You are in our thoughts. - Posted by: Wayne Carlson (nephew) on: Jul 14, 2012

David and Brian, Thinking of you both and remembering your Mother with a smile. While I only had the privilege of being in her company on a few occasions, they are memorable ones for me. I recall a lady with a gift for making people feel special in her presence, a great sense of humor and a kind heart. I am truly sorry for your loss. My Dear Cousins, We were so very saddened to learn of Aunt Evelyn's passing. She was such a wonderful and witty person. I adored her no nonsense stye and she always made me laugh. I will never forget how lovely she looked (as always) when she arrived on Bob's arm at the family reunion at Susan's and Jim's lake house. We all just circled around her and huddled at her feet we were all so thrilled to see her! The fact she made the trip at all speaks volumes to just how much she cherished family. Her presence there was a gift to each of us. I am especially grateful to her for all the love and care she gave my father when she came to live with Grandma & Grandpa Lang. She was a doting and loving older sister to him and he loved her so, so much. She was our matriarch and we all loved her and will miss her terribly. May you find comfort in the embrace of family and friends, peace in the knowledge that hers was a life well lived and joy in your memories and stories of her. I want to echo Dave' sentiments. The comments about our dear Mom are very comforting. Rosemary, interestingly, we had some charity thank-you notes printed and used the template that was used by your family after your Mother's passing. We liked the way you thanked people for "honoring" your remarkable Mom. Our Mom had saved your note and had previously show it to us. Many thanks! So sorry for your loss. I still have very fond memories of the times we were together. How very thoughtful of her to come to George's funeral. That meant a lot. - Posted by: Marvyl Carlson (sister-in-law) on: Jul 12, 2012

She was a wonderful aunt and a great host when I was little and visited the lake home with Uncle Herb. My only wish would be that our families had not been so separated by miles. May she rest now in peace. Our prayers are with the family. - Posted by: Rich Carlson (nephew) on: Jul 12, 2012

Evelyn graciously embraced both myself and my Mom Shirley into her large and loving extended family - I will be forever grateful for her kindness and warmth, her never failing to say hello and ask about my family and to have had the opportunity to know her. She was a grand lady!! - Posted by: Nancy LeBlond () on: Jul 11, 2012

Dear Ramsay Family, We are saddened to hear of your mother's passing. She and your father were great friends of my parents, Dr. Gerda and Gerard Allison. Evelyn was particularly kind to my mother. They communicated regularly. When my mother required more care and support, Evelyn sent frequent notes and cards of encouragement. It was very much appreciated. You will all be in our thoughts and prayers. Sincerely, Rosemary Allison Norrie - Posted by: Rosemary Allison Norrie (friend) on: Jul 11, 2012
