JOAN LUCINDA NEVINS We are saddened to announce that Joan Lucinda Nevins passed away on July 9, 2012. Predeceased by her parents Ralph and Florence Rea, her youngest daughter Kathryn (2004), and great-granddaughter Erika Jane (2011), Joan is survived by her son Lloyd, Edmonton, her son Ralph (Monica), Ottawa, and her daughter Patricia Komadowski (Bernie) of Winnipeg. Also left to mourn their Nannie' are eight grandchildren Eric and Max Engel, Amber (Drew) and Carrie (Brad) Komadowski, and Zachary, Angela, Pascale and Sally Nevins. Among many friends who will remember Joan is Father Raphael Glofcheski. Joan was born in Portage la Prairie on July 28, 1930. She was raised and went to school in Portage, after which she entered the Winnipeg General School of Nursing, graduating in 1952. After being employed in Alberta, British Columbia and Washington State, in 1955 she married in Bellingham, Washington where the children were born and went to school. In 1968 the family moved to Winnipeg. Joan graduated from the University of Manitoba in 1971, obtaining her Bachelor of Nursing degree, and went to work as Director of Nursing in the Portage Hospital, for several years. She then worked in Ontario, and her 35 years in nursing ended there in 1987. During her adult life Joan enjoyed being Leader of Song' in church. She was always busy with knitting and crocheting, and later spent much time making quilts with her friend Phyllis Moar. She gave the quilts away, many of them to the mission in the north. The great joy in her life was her children and grandchildren, along with cooking, and the cottage at Delta. Prayers will be held on Monday, July 16 at 7:00 p.m. at Blessed John XXIII Roman Catholic Church, 3390 Portage Ave. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, July 17 at 11:00 a.m. also at the Church with interment to follow at Hillside Cemetery, Portage la Prairie, MB. "Do not stand at my grave and weep, I am not there, I do not sleep; I am a thousand winds that blow, I am the diamond glints on snow; I am the sunlight on ripened grain, I am the gentle autumn's rain. Memories, you should keep, But do not weep!" 586-8044

  • Spemt a lot of quality time in the Nevins' household during my high school years Mrs. Nevins always opened up her house to our group. She always had a smile and will always remember her great sense of humor and her laughter. As we would sneak in or out she would always say, "What are you guys up to up there"........ She always knew but let us enjoy ourselves anyways Great lady, best to you Lloyd and family - Posted by: Reed Johnston (Friend) on: Jul 18, 2012
