Born: Jun 12, 1917
Date of Passing: Jul 16, 2012
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryOLGA POWELL (nee NITCHUK) June 12, 1917 - July 16, 2012 Suddenly on the morning of July 16, 2012, Olga went to be with her husband, daughter, parents, brothers and sisters. Olga was born in Winnipeg and grew up in a close knit family in Point Douglas where she attended Norquay School. She met her husband, Charles (Carl) Powell at the Shushkevich Hall. They married on May 2, 1936 and were blessed with two children, Carole and Valerie. Olga managed the household until her two girls had grown after which she worked for the Great-West Life Assurance Company until her retirement. She was a devout member of St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church throughout her life. She made sure she always claimed the last row for her family, ensuring the grandchildren stayed quiet. She was a wonderful cook with family favourites being pampusky, khrustyky, red velvet cake, donuts and banana slice. As for her own favourite foods, she REALLY enjoyed her desserts and would prefer desserts over eating the main course of a meal. Olga loved travelling with her family to places such as Hawaii, Mexico, and various destinations in Canada and mainland USA. Knitting was a favourite pastime and through the years she created some wonderful and colourful afghans for friends and relatives. These special handmade items are a reminder of her creativity and will be treasured forever. Olga loved her family. She always was willing to provide a helping hand looking after her grandchildren and even her great-grandchildren. She had a strict but kindly manner to ensure the children behaved. She had a heart of gold and would do anything for her family. Olga was predeceased by her parents Zachary Nyczyk (Nitchuk) in 1959 and Evdokia Nitchuk (Kulczycki) in 1971, husband, Carl in 1998, her daughter Valerie in 1994, her three brothers, Alexander, Michael, and John Nitchuk, and her two sisters, Maria Procopchuk and Anne Ryngach. Left to cherish her memory are her daughter Carole (Bill Zuk), and son-in-law Phillip Popiel; grandchildren Susan Zuk (James Rogowsky), Warren Zuk (Loreto), Philip Zuk, Mark Zuk (Lori Smelski), Jonathan Popiel (Sandy) and Lindsey Popiel; great-grandchildren, Nicole and Erin Rogowsky, and Jack, Sawyer and Anjali Zuk, sister-in-law Jean Nitchuk, and numerous nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank all staff on 4A and 2A at Holy Family Home. We wish to express our sincere appreciation for the support and expressions of love and kindness that our mother, grandmother and great-grandmother received at Holy Family Home. Cremation has taken place and a celebration of Olga's life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, July 19 at St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church, 737 Bannerman with Father Isidore Dziadyk, OSBM officiating. A private family interment will follow later. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Holy Family Home Building Fund, Alzheimer Society of Manitoba, Manitoba Parents for Ukrainian Education or a charity of your choice. Loving and kind in all her ways, Upright and just, to the end of her days, Sincere and true, in her heart and mind, Beautiful memories she left behind. May she Rest in Peace.... I worked at Cooper's grocery store on William Ave., and she was a very nice, kind Lady. She looked after Carl and always talked so lovingly about her family. You are in my thoughts today........ - Posted by: Judy Walton () on: Jul 18, 2012
