NICHOLAS BOYD Peacefully on July 17, 2012, at Concordia Place, Nick Boyd was reunited with his wife Lillian at the age of 103 years. Nick is survived by his children Norma Holland, Jean (Al) Rogowski and Gordon Boyd; grandchildren Kirby Holland, Ariel Beaudoin, Colleen Boyd and Derek Boyd and their mother Carol; six great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Nick was born in Gimli, MB. He left home at an early age and worked for 47 years in a bedding company. He and his wife celebrated their golden wedding anniversary prior to her passing. They both met at a young age through family and became a lasting couple. Nick spent many happy visits with his children and took several trips to visit natural wonders. He still could hit a pool ball at 101. He was an amazing man who was always kind and generous to others. A rare individual who lived to plow a field with an ox, to see the first man land on the moon and to live in two centuries. To know him was to love him. The family would like to thank Dr. Frank Martin, Dr. Tamara Buschell, Dr. Paul Sawchuk, the many staff homecare workers, hospital staff both at Seven Oaks, Concordia, and Concordia Place who had as difficult time as his family saying goodbye to him. A Celebration of Nick's life will be held on Friday, July 27 at 11:00 a.m. at Concordia Place, 1000 Molson Street. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Nick's memory to Manitoba Society of Seniors, Inc. (MSOS) or to The Alzheimer Society of Manitoba. 586-8044

Condolences & Memories (4 entries)

  • God Bless Nick! I was honored to have a few games of pool with Nick at 100 years old and he was certainly a sharp shooter. A man with Charm and Dignity, and a true gentleman. He will hold a place in my heart..... - Posted by: Terri McDonald (friend) on: Feb 10, 2013

  • My Grandy, Nick Boyd, is finally at peace and reunited with his wife, my Grammy Boyd, as he has wished and patiently waited for several years now. While he will surely be missed by myself, my husband and my 2 daughters, we really are so lucky to have been able to spend the time with him we did over the years even though we lived so far away. Memories of my Grandy go back to when I was very young, when we lived in Winnipeg. Despite strong hands, my Grandy had the most gentle touch when he held my hand or patted me on the head. I remember evenings at Grandys house in the "TV room" helping them play tv bingo or on special occasions serving snacks at family gatherings. From early on I began to appreciate Grandy's storytelling abilities about his childhood, his growing up and making a life of his own, meeting my Grammy, winning her heart and marrying her. While he often told the same stories time after time, I now wish at one point I had recorded them as the wisdom and life lessons are those not taught at school. As I grew older, I enjoyed spending time with him either shopping, where each trip usually had a visit to the furniture department, where he and I sat on each bed and he offered his professional opinion on each mattress for sale; or during his trips to London, Ontario, where we'd spend an afternoon visiting open houses - him dressed up spiffy in a suit and hat- all the while being "woo-ed" by home builders. As an adult I fondly would chuckle at "Grandy-isms" such as his recounting the "son of a gun" he had met, the "kibitzing" he had been part of or seen or the " what-cha-ma-call it " he was wanting to look at. He loved the spontaneous visits my husband and I would make near christmas for many years with our daughters -his great granddaughters. He loved to watch them, talk to them, sharing stories of long ago, and even came to watch them toboggan and skate at the park near his house, just as he did with me when I was small. I laugh at the memory of him as he used to get down on the floor and play barbies or Polly pockets with Amy and Alyssa, let them help decorate his Christmas tree, or play a few rounds of yahtzee- a game we all loved to play during visits even when I was young. I feel truly lucky to have had such a wonderful Grandy and know that although he is gone, the memory of this wonderful, strong kind man will live on not only in our lives and hearts forever but will continue though his great grandchildren as they also remember his gentle loving personality. I love you Grandy! - Posted by: Ariel Beaudoin with Husband Al , and daughters amy and Alyssa (Granddaughter) on: Jul 23, 2012

  • I had the privilege of spending some time with Nick on his 1 on 1's at the Concordia Place Nursing Home. First time I met him, Jean and I took him out to Lockport for a hotdog. He loved the ride. I could never believe that he would eat what Jean ordered him there. A double foot long hotdog, french fries and a drink! At over 100 years old!!!! He ate it all! That was truly an amazing trip! Nick was always on the ball. Although hard of hearing, he always had a smile and often said yes to what he didn't know he was saying yes to!!!! Truly a humble man. My condolences to you all. - Posted by: Ange Giesbrecht (HCA from Concordia Hospital) on: Jul 22, 2012

  • Rest In Peace Nick Boyd, AKA Grandy Boyd & Great-Grandy Boyd - You did well Grandy! From humble beginnings, forced to care for & support your brothers & sisters at an age we would think of as ridiculous today, you battled on to have & support & educate your own family, watch your grandkids grow up & even enjoy the company of some of your great-grandchildren. You were the personification of humility, a man... whose memory of I cherish dearly and am seriously grateful for. You're a man of the type they don't make any more. Don't blame you for getting too tired to carry on after 103 years of having a go. You deserve a decent rest. Give my love to my Dad when you bump into him, he's been waiting for decent company for a while now . . . . Go safe, stay well, be happy. - Posted by: Kirby Holland (Eldest Grandson) on: Jul 19, 2012
