ELSIE CRAWFORD Peacefully on Friday, July 20, 2012, Elsie Crawford passed away at Fred Douglas Lodge. Left to cherish her memory are her daughter and son-in-law, Rae and Bruce Leaden, two grandchildren, Angelina Kuz and Paul Leaden, and three great-grandchildren, Michael Kuz, Kaitlynn and Sierra Leaden. She will also be missed by many nieces, nephews and friends. Elsie was predeceased by her husband George, sister Irene McCue and brothers Bert and Norm Paisley. Born in Londonderry, Northern Ireland on November 30, 1916, mom was the eldest child of Bert and Betty Paisley. The family immigrated to Winnipeg in 1920 and first settled in Transcona. As the family grew they moved to the West End and mom went to Isaac Brock School and Daniel McIntyre Collegiate. After graduation she took secretarial training and worked for many years in the wages office of Eaton's. In 1943 she married George Crawford and during the war years they lived in Southern Ontario where George was posted with the RCAF. After the war they returned to Manitoba. In 1950 they purchased a home in Crescentwood where mom lived until 2008. In 1953 daughter Rae was born and mom was very happy to stay at home and be a full-time parent. Mom was active in her community, especially at Harrow United Church. For many years she taught Sunday school and devoted time to the outreach and visitation committees. She also volunteered for many years with the Manitoba Lung Association and Meals on Wheels. Mom loved learning and attended the University of Winnipeg where she attained her BA in psychology in 1975. As a senior she took painting classes and studied conversational French. Her main concern was always her family and friends spending countless hours visiting, driving people to appointments and baking special treats. In 2009, mom moved into Fred Douglas Lodge and her family greatly appreciated the care and compassion shown by the staff to all the residents. A celebration of Elsie's life will be held at Harrow United Church on Monday, July 30 at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations to Harrow United Church Memorial Fund or Fred Douglas Lodge would be appreciated.

Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • Our family moved from Scotland to Winnipeg in the 60s and I became a friend of Rae's at school. I didn't meet Mrs Crawford many times, but I realised she was a lovely lady, just as her daughter is. Condolences to Rae and Bruce and all the family. Our prayers are with you. Love and best wishes from Marjory Szurko and family - Posted by: Marjory Szurko (Rae's friend) on: Jul 28, 2012

  • Elsie Crawford was a lovely lady and a gentle soul. Hard to believe that Rae and I have been friends since the age of seven- so her mother was simply a part of life to me since my childhood. Although I had not seen Mrs. Crawford in several years, it was always nice to know that her presence went on - a bright and wonderful person who was always curious, always learning, and always caring of others. I will remember her fondly. Condolences to Rae and the family. - Posted by: Pamela Johnson (Friend) on: Jul 27, 2012
