MURRAY MALKIN Peacefully, with his family at his side, Murray lost his battle with cancer on July 25, 2012. Throughout his illness, Murray remained positive and hopeful and was the ultimate fighter who believed that he would beat this disease. He never complained or asked why this had happened to him. Murray was predeceased by his father Charles. He will be deeply missed by his mother, Sheila, sister Laurel and her husband David Folk, his favourite niece, Alli, and favourite nephew, Josh. Murray was the best uncle ever, and was adored by Alli and Josh, even though he cheated at Scrabble and never let them win a game with him. Murray was born in Winnipeg on August 26, 1953 and moved to Toronto in 1975 to study Journalism at Ryerson. Murray never left Toronto where he began his career in Sports Journalism. Murray loved his career and was the ever-questioning, always probing reporter. He first worked at the Canadian Jewish News and then moved to the Globe and Mail where he worked for over 25 years until his illness no longer allowed him to continue. Murray's family is forever indebted to his amazing friends: Steven Finkelstein, Barbara Goldberg, Stephen Katz, Bruce Keleher, Sheldon Kohn, Marty Koyle, Moe Lerner, Leslie Mendelson, Rob Rosenblat, Lorne Rubenstein, and all of his buddies at the Bloor Street Y. Thank you cousins David and Mendl for all your medical advice and help. Thank you also to Dr. Jonathan Irish, Dr. Monica Krzyzanowska, Dr. Julia Ridley, Dr. Anna Sawka, and Dr. Alexandra Easson. Many thanks also to all of Murray's wonderful Community Care assistants, nurses, and Dr. Marnie Howe. Finally, the family and friends wish to thank the Palliative Care Unit at the Princess Margaret Hospital whose compassion and extraordinary care and kindness made Murray's final days as humane and comfortable as possible. Funeral will be held today, July 27, 2012, at 1:00 p.m. at the Chesed Shel Emes, with burial following at the Hebrew Sick Benefit Cemetery. Meal of condolence at 1518 Mathers Bay W. Shiva will be held at 504-255 Wellington Cres. In lieu of flowers, donations to a charity of your choice will be gratefully appreciated.

Condolences & Memories (10 entries)

  • I have many fond memories of Murray from high school; his humor was the highlight of many a boring class. We later kept up a friendship in Toronto. We also happened to share a birthday (although he was a year older), so I will be thinking of him, as always, later this month. He spoke often of his family; I know what a devoted son and brother he was. I am so sorry for your loss. - Posted by: Sandra Rabinovitch (friend) on: Aug 03, 2012

  • I am sorry to hear of Murray's passing. He was a colleague of mine many years ago at the Canadian Jewish News in the early 1980s. He was a lovely guy, and as many have mentioned, had a twinkle in his eye and a real sense of fun. Over the years since then he got in touch and we met for coffee and reminisced a couple of times, as recently as a few years ago when he told me about his battle with cancer. And exactly as described, I don't recall him being the least bit angry about it. I'm sure Murray will be greatly missed by those close to him. My condolences go to his family and friends. - Posted by: Janice Bearg (former colleague at Canadian Jewish News) on: Jul 29, 2012

  • my sincere condolences to the family. I am deeply saddened to hear of Murray's passing. I too thought he may fight the disease. Murray was friends with my cousin Steven katz. They had a great relationship, always kibbutzing and laughing. You will be missed Murray by all your friends and family. - Posted by: Shellie Rykiss (friend) on: Jul 27, 2012

  • Dear Laurel: I am deeply saddened to hear of the loss of your dear brother, Murray. I remember him as being a gentle soul who was true and genuine and kind. Of course, I have so many fond memories that are just coming alive in me now upon hearing of his passing, particularly, the special early childhood memories of you both in the days of Hertzaliah Synagogue. My sincere condolances to you and your whole family. With much fondness, Grant - Posted by: Grant Kahane (old friend) on: Jul 27, 2012

  • Murray and I were very good friends throughout elementary school in Winnipeg. I have many fond memories, one of which underscores Murray's early interest in sports. I recall that we both loved to watch wrestling together Saturday afternoons on televison. We enjoyed it so much that we sold drinks and potato chips at the Winnipeg Auditorium so that we could see live wrestling. I was thinking of Murray within the past year and I regret not reaching out to connect. My sincerest condolences to Murray's mother and sister. - Posted by: Jim Kahane (Friend ) on: Jul 27, 2012

  • I knew Murray very well when I was at The Globe and Mail. Best memory might be the time I brought a mini tape recorder into the office, with the sounds of a Formula One racecar (rapis gearchanges). Murray took it and, several times played a few short burst over the telephone intercom system, just to see the reaction of all the reporters and copy editors in the newsroom. I'm not sure how many knew the source of the strange sounds, but Murray had a twinkle in his eye and a wide grin on his face. - Posted by: Michael Cosgrove (Friend) on: Jul 27, 2012
