JOHN BOROWIEC Peacefully, with his family by his side, John passed away on August 7, 2012 at Riverview Health Centre at the age of 82 years. He will be lovingly remembered by his wife Tessie, daughter Carol (Lyall), son Dave (Joanne), grandchildren Jason (Megan) and Scott (Amanda), great-granddaughter Brooke, sister Genowefa (Waclaw), nieces, nephews and extended family in Winnipeg and Poland. John was predeceased by his parents Pawel and Aniela Borowiec, son-in-law Chester Tabor. John was born in Nowy Michalin, Poland on February 19, 1930. As a nine year old, his life was changed forever by the Second World War and Soviet invasion of Eastern Poland. He and his family were deported east through the Soviet Republic to Szabunia, Archangielsk Oblast. As refugees, his family traveled through Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kirgystan, Persia and India, finally arriving in 1943 at Colonia Santa Rosa refugee camp near Leon, Guanajuato province, Mexico. In 1948, he came to Canada where he was reunited with some of his extended family in Stonewall. He soon moved to Winnipeg, where he found work. John met and married Tessie, the love of his life in Winnipeg. They would have celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary on August 26, 2012. He worked in construction until being hired by the Canadian Pacific Railway, where he worked for 37 years, retiring in 1989. John spent many hours league bowling with friends. He was also an avid outdoorsman, spending much of his free time fishing, hunting, golfing and blueberry or mushroom picking. After retirement, he was passionate about his farm at Whitemouth Lake, where he escaped to enjoy these same outdoor pursuits, although in later years he was more likely to watch the deer and the fox, rather than hunt them. John was a quiet man who was extremely devoted to his wife. His family was his #1 priority. John was loved by many friends and neighbours and will be sadly missed by all. The family wishes to acknowledge Dr. Sikora, Dr. Lyn and Dr. Wong, along with their staff for their empathy. Viewing will be on Friday, August 10 at 9:30 a.m. at Christ the King Church, 847 St. Mary's Rd. followed by Mass of Christian Burial being celebrated at 10:00 a.m. with Fr. Renato Pasinato officiating. Interment at Glen Lawn Memorial Gardens, 455 Lagimodiere Blvd. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, Manitoba Division. 204 586-8044

  • I wish to express my sincere condolences to John's family. I met John when he and Tess came to visit Carol in Ontario. What I will remember most is his happy smile and his great sense of humour. He was quite the joker and always looked at life in a positive light. Lots of love to the family. - Posted by: Lynn Graham (Friend) on: Aug 09, 2012

  • I was tremendously saddened to hear of Uncle Johnny's passing. I have many, many fond childhood memories of spending time at his house. More recently, I was at his surprise anniversary (60th?), and last summer a visit to his home with my brother Sean, where we ate holopchi and apple pie (Auntie Tessie is an amazing cook)- while listening to the stories of his childhood and how he met Auntie Tessie. On occasion he told Auntie Tessie to "Stop Interrupting!!!" During that visit, he talked of my Grandpa (Borden Karan) and told us a few stories that brought a smile to my face. Life is so short and changes so suddenly. I will always remember him fondly. xoxoxo - Posted by: Heather Karan-Trudell ( Niece) on: Aug 08, 2012
