STEVE LESKIW Peacefully with his wife by his side, our dad Steve passed away after a lengthy illness on Tuesday, August 7, 2012 at Concordia Hospital. He leaves to mourn his loving wife of 60 years Emily, son Michael (Evelyn), daughter April (Gary), and grandchildren Amanda, Megan, and Owen. Also left to cherish his memory is nephews Allan, Donny, David and Brian, brother-in-law Hank, family and friends. He was predeceased by his parents and sister Steffie in 1992. Steve was born in Transcona on December 4, 1929 and lived in the area until his retirement in 1985. He worked for the C.N.R at the Transcona shops since his youth retiring in 1985. Upon his retirement he and Emily retired out to the country and five acres which kept our dad very busy with many gardens and a yard he took pride in. He loved getting on his tractor and working in the yard. He loved hockey and played it in his youth, and couldn't miss watching a Jets game on TV. Travelling was always a big thing, in their youth, our parents would head out to Grand Marais nearly every weekend, and this continued even after they had children. It was a weekly event to The Courtyard at the beach, where several families would come, and have a wonderful time playing games and singing songs well into the early morning. Or listening to Steve's jokes and stories and trying to figure out if he was telling the truth. You could find Steve behind the wheel of either a camper and truck in the 1970s, or the motorhomes in the 1980s as the family would head down to California to visit family every summer. After he retired, Emily and he would travel down to Texas as snowbirds to escape the winter cold, later on they relaxed in Thousand Palms California for the winter. Steve was very active at St. Michael's Church in Transcona. He would grounds keep the yard, and would fix what needed to be done. He also took on the role of Hall rentals man for several years. He belonged to the Brotherhood and was Grand Knight in 1986-87 for the Bishop Budka's Knights of Columbus, which he belonged to and enjoyed for many years. You could find him some Wednesdays helping out at the St. Michael's Bingo's, and every second Friday making perogies downstairs in the hall. Divine Liturgy will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, August 13 at St. Michael's Ukrainian Catholic Church, 400 Day Street with Rev. Michael Krochak and Rev. Deacon Victor Humniski officiating. Interment with immediate family will take place at All Saints Cemetery. The family wishes to thank the nurses and staff at Concordia Hospital for taking care of dad while he was there. Pallbearers: Allan Franchuk, Donny Franchuk, David Franchuk, Brian Franchuk, Gary Bennett, Owen Bennett Honorary Pallbearers: Walter Mudlo, George Famega, William Markusa, Peter Kraj Those wishing to make a donation may do so CancerCare Manitoba or a charity of your choice.
