ALECSANDRA (ALICE) BOYKO (nee SOLOWEY) After a courageous battle with health issues which she bore with grace and dignity, Alice passed away peacefully in her home surrounded by family on Friday, August 10, 2012. She was predeceased by her husband Jack and infant son Ernie. Left to cherish her memory are children Jeanette (Louis), Larry, Ron (Liz), Gerald, Brian (Linda), Debbie (Hans), Mike, Cindy (Jim) and Melody (Rod) as well as her precious 17 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren, and many extended family members and friends. Alice was born in 1923, in Veregin, SK, to Annie and Phillip Solowey and grew up on a farm in Swan Plain, SK, where she attended Poelcapelle School and worked on the family farm. She met and then married Jack in 1945. They began their married life on a farm in Norquay moving to Flin Flon in 1951, and then Winnipeg in 1954, where she remained until her passing. Alice worked as a homemaker until the age of 45 when she took a position as a dietary aide and as dietary aide supervisor at Deer Lodge Hospital/Centre, where she worked until retirement in 1988. Alice enjoyed spending time with family and it was important to her that her children come together on the holidays to enjoy a meal. She would spend countless hours preparing her delicious food. Alice had many interests including knitting, cooking, sewing, and word puzzles. She read both city newspapers every day, was passionate about politics, followed many sports and loved her Toronto Blue Jays. She had regular Bingo nights and otherwise spent her time surrounded by family and caring for the many cats, dogs and birds she cherished as part of the family. Alice was a wonderful Mother and Baba and will be lovingly remembered. A special acknowledgement is sent to those family members who took care of Mom over the last two years fulfilling her wish to remain in her home. The family would also like to take this opportunity to thank homecare and palliative care for their kind assistance. Viewing and prayers will take place on Tuesday, August 14, 2012, at 7:00 p.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue. Funeral mass will be held on Wednesday, August 15, 2012, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary the Protectress Church, 820 Burrows with Fr. Alexander Harkavyi presiding. Interment and reception will follow at Glen Eden Memorial Gardens, 4477 Main Street. In lieu of flowers donations can be made in memory of Alice to the No Kill Pet Shelter on Portage Ave and Country Club Blvd. or to CancerCare Manitoba. Jack and Alice are now truly together forever.
