GEORGE G. ELIAS 1914 - 2012 On Thursday, August 16, 2012, at Boundary Trails Health Centre, George G. Elias, aged 97 years of Winkler, MB, formerly of the Haskett district, went to his eternal rest. He leaves to mourn his passing three daughters, Shirley and Abe Unger of California (Jennifer and James Unger), Grace and Henry Enns of California (Duane Enns, Sherry and John Shannon, Vanessa and Greg Garcia, Phillip and Lindsey Enns), Sylvia Josse of Winnipeg (Kristel and Ben Lazo), one son, Gerry Elias of the Haskett district (Cassandra and Gerry Giesbrecht, Ginelle, Brendan, Natalie) and 14 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wife, Martha in 2001, son, Gordon in 1954, son-in-law, Genic Josse in 2009 and grandson, Andrew Josse, four brothers and two sisters. George was born in Morse, Saskatchewan and moved to Manitoba as a child. At an early adult age, George began a long and successful career in farming at Haskett when he assumed responsibility of the family farm. His accomplishments in farming were a testament to his strong work ethic and dedication. He was crowned as the Barley King in 1946 and 1947 for producing exceptional quality registered seed. George was a forward-thinker; committed to a life time of learning and educating others about the importance of farming in our communities. George was blessed with a lifelong love for his wife Martha, who was his soul mate and who provided unending support to him throughout their marriage. He had great joy in the many accomplishments of his children, grandchildren and great-grand-children. His love of the Lord was a constant in his life, which he enjoyed sharing with others. In addition to his passion and commitment to his family and farming, George spent much of his life sharing his passion to provide a government that allows people to be free and blessed by the fruits of their labour. Viewing will be (today) Tuesday from 1:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Wiebe Funeral Home, 121 8th Street in Winkler and at the church prior to the service. Condolences & Memories (3 entries)

  • We met Mr. Elias only once, about 3-4 weeks ago while visiting my Mom(Eva L. Wiebe) in Salem. I greeted him in the main lower corridor and he introduced himself to us (myself and my daughter and two grandchildren). He said he was the Barley King..We had a nice chat and I was happy we got to meet him. Pls. accept our condolences and love on your loss... - Posted by: Tom Wiebe (Lacombe,Ab.) • To the family: Your dad was one of three major adult influences in my growing up years in Haskett Manitoba. One of the first memories I have of your family was spending time with your brother Gordon when he came to school. Later when I was able to appreciate the what, where and why your dad was referred to as 'Barley King' I was led to see and accept a bigger world that went far beyond Winkler. We all knew his belief in and commitment to seek to make this a better world to live in and it was evident whenever I would meet him in Winkler and as well the last time at the reunion in Haskett. My sincere condolences to the family and blessings to all of you as you celebrate his life. • To Shirley and Grace: I fondly remember the years at Haskett. As a new teacher, I appreciated the support of your mom and dad. In the recent months while your dad was at Salem, I would remind him of that time, as "Miss Ens". He would smile and his eyes would twinkle. He would say, "Yes, that's good!" On Thursdays a group of ladies always sing for the residents. We would ask them for their favourites. On one Thursday your dad suggested, "All the way my Saviour leads me". That was a meaningful testimony. I send my condolences and my love to you! 'Miss Ens' - MaryAnne Zacharias - Posted by: MaryAnne Zacharias (teacher in Haskett) on: Aug 21, 2012
