MARY LAGIEWKA On Tuesday, August 21, 2012, Mary Lagiewka passed away peacefully with family at her side at her residence in Bethania Personal Care Home. She was 91 years of age. Mary was born on April 17, 1921, in Georgstal, district of Zaporozhe in the Ukraine. She was predeceased by her husband Joe, her mother and father and all her sisters. She leaves to mourn and cherish fond memories, her sons Ed (Joan), Rick (Norinne), daughter Doris (Thom), grandchildren Deanne, Christian, Kyle, Jacquelyn, Kelly and Arron, great-grandchildren Lily, Cole, Nicole and Ryan, nephews Vic, George and Henry, and niece Anne of B.C. and many others in Russia and Poland. She emigrated to Canada in 1949, and worked hard in raising her family in Altona, Morris and finally Winnipeg. Her family was the most important part of life to her and she cherished us all dearly. She especially loved visiting her sister Agnes in Abbotsford, B.C. They had a loving and fun relationship that lasted throughout their lives. Mary enjoyed listening to music from Heintje and dancing to many of Ivan Rebroff's rousing songs. She made beautiful petit-point and needlepoint art which hangs proudly in her children's homes. She adored animals of all shapes and sizes, especially her dog Trixie who predeceased her. The family would like to extend their gratitude to the staff of Bethania Personal Care Home for their kind care and compassion during her many years there. A private service will be held next week when she will be laid to rest beside her husband, Joe. In lieu of flowers, a donation in her memory may be made to the Winnipeg Humane Society or The Bethania Memorial Foundation.

  • We have many memories of Tante Mary, aka Tante "Mitzje" (pronounced MEETJA). Lots of time was spent at the house on Munroe when we were kids. There were always lots of laughs involved when our mom (Susie) and Tante Mary were together - even more so when Tante Agnes came to town. Ed, Rick and Doris - you're so lucky to have had your mom for this long. Our thoughts are with you and your families. - Posted by: Sylvia and John Horn (Friends) on: Sep 13, 2012

  • We have known Aunt Mary for many years. She was a very fun lady. We had so much fun visiting with her and her sister Agnes. Something that she thought was very funny was, when I and my Mom picked her up from Bethania and we went to my house. We were having such a good time when all off a sudden the door bell rang. It was the police looking for her. When I picked her up I asked her if she needed to tell anybody I was picking her up. She said they know. We had her children worried sick not knowing where their Mother was. I felt so bad. Well I learned my lesson. Another day I remember well was one year on Christmas eve the trees looked like crystal trees. I picked up my Mom and Aunt Mary and we went for a ride to look at the beautiful crystal glass trees. It was unbelievably beautiful. It's amazing when Aunt Mary and Aunt Agnes told us stories from the past fleeing Russia. We have great memories. We miss the good times we had. We wish you the Family our deepest sympathy. Your Mother was a great lady. She had a good heart. We loved her very much.
