EUGENIE (JEAN) NIKOLAI After a short battle with Leukemia, Jean left us peacefully on the night of August 27, 2012. With her family at her bedside she drifted off to be with the Lord. Jean is survived by her beloved husband of 61 years, Ben Nikolai, and children, Bernie Nikolai (Tina) and Ruth Ziegler (Robert), grandchildren Michael (Lisa), Stephen, Lisa and Scott, and great-granddaughter Lily. She is also survived by her brother Herbie Butz (Louise), nieces, nephews and countless loving friends. Born January 2, 1929, she lived a full and beautiful life to the age of 83. For 24 years she worked as a Nurses Aide at the Princess Elizabeth Hospital where she touched the lives of many. Jean loved to go swimming or simply sit among the flowers in her garden. As a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church, she had unwavering faith in the Lord. But above all, Jean loved and supported her family unconditionally, always putting the needs of others before her own. No longer will she suffer, or ever again be pained, she's in a place without hurt or limitations, and her spirit glows bright with the love and beauty she possessed in life. Our loss is truly Heaven's gain and someday we'll all be together with her again. Service will be held Saturday, September 1, 2012, 11:30 a.m. at St. Peter's Lutheran Church, 65 Walnut Street, Winnipeg, MB. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her name to the St. Boniface Hospital. Bardal Funeral Home and Crematorium 774-7474 www.bardal.ca

Condolences & Memories (3 entries)

  • Jean was a wonderful woman and I will miss talking to her while in our aquasize class. She was a pleasure to know. I will miss her wisdom and caring nature. - Posted by: Sharon Stathers (Friend) on: Oct 04, 2012

  • I will always remember Jean for her kindness. Almost 60 years ago, she invited a little farm girl (me) to come back to the city with her to attend my Aunt Olga's bridal shower. Jean bought me a beautiful dress to wear, and she didn't seem to notice how many of those fancy sandwiches that I gobbled up. Jean had the ability to make others feel special. She was a beautiful person, inside and out. - Posted by: Gail Piper (Zacharias) (Cousin) on: Aug 31, 2012

  • Aunty Jean was a loving, caring, kind woman. She had an honest caring about people and always wanted they to achieve whatever goal they set for themselves. When I first came to Winnipeg, I lived with Aunty Jean, Uncle Ben and Ruth. They welcomed me into their family and treated me like every other member of their family. Aunty Jean always told me I should be a social worker, even though I was enrolled in the faculty of education. It was funny because many years later, I got involved with the non-profit world and my work was very much social work type tasks. To Uncle Ben, Ruth (Rob), Bernie (Tina) and all the grandchildren and great grandchildren my heart goes out to you. I know first hand what a special woman Aunty Jean was and what a hole she will leave in the fabric of our lives. But she will be watching over us from the other side and working hard to ease the stressors in our lives. I love you Aunty Jean and will miss you so much. You always had an ear to listen, wisdom to share, and love to give. - Posted by: Ingrid Zacharias (Niece) on: Aug 31, 2012
