ROBERT JOSEPH CURRIE November 5, 1961 August 30, 2012 Rob died peacefully on August 30, in the Palliative Care ward of St. Boniface Hospital, after a 12 month struggle with cancer. Father to Brittany and Cris, and loving brother to Andrea Currie, of Cape Breton Island, NS, and Raymond Currie, of Vancouver, BC. He is predeceased by his first child Kassie, less than a day old, and his father, Robert Currie, and survived by his mother, Irene Currie, of Salt Spring Island, BC, and his devoted and loving uncle Raymond Currie, of Winnipeg, and Raymond's wife, Charlene. Rob leaves a huge hole in the hearts of those of us who were close to him and he will also be missed by all the members of his extended family, especially the cousins and in-laws who made it a point to visit him throughout the difficult progression of his illness. Rob's career spanned occupations including truck driving, running a trucking company, warehouse management, and security. He was a decent and friendly man who made friends easily. He enjoyed going on family vacations, days at the cottage, boating, doing things with his kids, and his beloved Great Danes. He discovered his Metis ancestry when he was already an adult and made sure his children connected with their Metis culture and heritage. Rob's response to his illness revealed his true character in ways that far surpassed what could be expected of a young man facing his death so much sooner than any of us would have hoped. He was exemplary in his courage, always wanting to know the truth about his condition. He was patient and understanding as his plan of care went through many changes that were hard on him, and he was consistently co-operative with and appreciative of the nursing staff that cared for him over many months. He became known in their circles as someone who never complained, and was always grateful for the care he received. His strength of character, graciousness, and dignity were always evident, interspersed with mischievous humour and a beautiful smile that stayed with him right until the end. Rob will be remembered as someone who was stoic in the face of adversity and who had an amazing capacity to make the most out of every moment. Heartfelt thanks go out to those who rallied around Rob during the past year and kept him company on this difficult part of his journey. The doctors, nurses, ward clerks, and cleaners on 8A formed a seamless circle of care around Rob, attending to him with compassion and the utmost professionalism, and also caring for the family members who spent a lot of time with him in the hospital. The gratitude we feel for the way they cared for our loved one cannot be adequately expressed. Mass of the Resurrection will be held on Tuesday, September 4 at St. Ignatius Parish, 255 Stafford (at Corydon) at 11:00 a.m. Interment to follow at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the St. Boniface Hospital palliative care unit, 409 Tache Ave., Winnipeg, MB, R2H 2A6. LECLAIRE BROTHERS in care of arrangements, 204-775-2220.
