CLARA WANDA MCDOWELL (nee OLDACK) With heavy hearts we announce the sudden passing of our mother and grandmother, Clara Wanda McDowell on August 30, 2012 at the Grace Hospital in Winnipeg, Manitoba. She will be lovingly missed by her three children, Ken (Rosemary), Carol (Dar) and Rod (Kathy) and her five grandchildren, Brett, Kristine, Nikki, Kimberly, Cameron, and her great-granddaughter, Zola. Mom leaves behind her sister-in-law Norma Oldack of Lindsay, Ontario, many nieces and nephews and special family friends John, Margaret, Jayne, Todd, and Scott Percival. Mom was predeceased by her husband Doug McDowell, parents John and Bertha Oldack, her four sisters Hedy Beischer, Edna Ewashchuk, Elsie Weigelt and Lorraine Livingstone and her only brother, John Oldack of Toronto, Ontario. Mom was born in Giroux, Manitoba on November 19, 1923 and moved to Winnipeg at a very young age. She worked at Eaton's Mail Order until Mom and Dad were married in February 1949. In 1953 they moved to St. Vital where together they raised their family. After many years at home, mom resumed working first at St. Amant Centre and later at Eaton's in the Notion's Department. Her life revolved around her family, especially her grandchildren and most recently her great-granddaughter. Mom and Dad made many trips to Vancouver and travelled to Germany and England before the onset of dad's health problems. She enjoyed sewing, playing cards, jigsaw puzzles, knitting and crocheting and most of all, playing bingo. Mom played bingo at Norberry and Glenlee Community Centres for many years. Dad's death in February was a great loss to her, however, she was able to stay in the family home until her passing. The family would like to thank the staff at Grace Hospital Intensive Care Unit who cared for her these last few days. We would also like to thank Dr. Roy Smith for his many years of care. A celebration of her life will be held at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, September 5, 2012 at Thomson In the Park Funeral Home, 1291 McGillivray Blvd. Flowers are gratefully declined. A donation in mom's memory to a charity of your choice would be greatly appreciated. THOMSON IN THE PARK 925-1120 Condolences may be sent to www.thomsoninthepark.com

Condolences & Memories (5 entries)

  • I recall Mrs McDowell as a good humoured lady. Always smiling and chuckling about whatever she was talking about. I also recall her fondness for her little pooch, "Bambi" was its name. (I think) Mr and Mrs McDowell were two of the parents in the Greendell area who I felt safe to be around. They were wonderful people. - Posted by: John Melnick (Neighbor) on: Sep 18, 2012

  • Hello Ken, Carol and Rod. Guys, to you and all of your families I just want to tell you all how deeply sorry I am about the loss of your mom so soon after your father. I truly am sorry for you all and hope you will please accept my deepest sympathy. I still think of everyone often. Take care of yourselves. Doug. - Posted by: Doug Ewaschuk (Nephew) on: Sep 16, 2012

  • I was a teenager in high school when I got to know Mrs. McDowell. We sometimes worked the same shift. The day of the big snowstorm in 1965 (?) she and I were working. Our shift ended at 7 pm. She and I set out to walk home, in thigh high snow. Mr. McDowell met his wife part way and had made a path for her in the deep snow. We got to the McDowell home first and I continued along the next few houses to my house. I always liked seeing her, at work or in the neighbourhood. - Posted by: Susan Melnick (I was a neighbour on Woodlawn , Also, I worked at the San with your Mom. She was a lively and intere) on: Sep 04, 2012
