ALFRED JELLIFF 1930 - 2012 The sun rose on January 15, 1930 and set on Saturday, September 1, 2012, in the life of Alfred (Al) Edward Jelliff. Left temporarily behind are his beloved wife of 58 years, Irene; daughters Val (John) of Kenora, Ontario; Sandy (Murray) of Warren, Manitoba; grandchildren Jen (Rhys), Matt (Aubree), Kelsi, Devon (Jesse), Sawyer and Dallas; and three great-grandchildren, Madden, Beck and Farrah. He was able to see his fourth great-grandchild Baby Brolly, shortly before his journey ended. He also leaves to mourn his sister Gai Brown of Stonewall, Manitoba, sister-in-law Mazie Shearer of Wawanesa, Manitoba; as well as several nieces and nephews. Dad, Grandpa, Great-Pa was born in Winnipeg and grew up in Rivers, Manitoba. After meeting and marrying the love of his life, Al and Irene resided in Rivers where he worked in his father's blacksmith shop and operated heavy equipment at the River's Air Force Base. During that time he also drove ambulance as a volunteer. While in Rivers, Al and Irene enjoyed curling, baseball and many a country dance. When they relocated to Winnipeg, Al started his career as a long haul trucker. He worked for Versatile as the Transport Manager and then established Simtax, a company to serve independent operators and trucking fleets with fuel taxes and licensing. Dad, Al was very proud of his family and never failed to support us on our journeys. He gained great pleasure from watching his grandchildren play hockey, ringette, basketball, soccer and dance. He was always ready to drop what he was doing to help out his daughters and grandchildren. Al acted as president of the 17 Wing Warrant Officer's and Sergeant's Mess Associate Members for many years, and he and Irene spent many memorable times at the Sergeant's Mess with friends dancing till the wee hours. He had a wonderful sense of humour and a gift for story-telling and was always up for a prank or a good joke. Al was a proud member of the Phoenix Masonic Lodge and the Khartum Shriners - Scooter Unit. He was a former riding captain and a past president of the unit, and thoroughly enjoyed spending time with his riding buddies and performing with the team. In Dad's year long battle with cancer, he remained positive and upbeat and never lost his determination to continue on with his life. His courage, strength and love will forever live in the hearts of those who were close to him. On Friday, September 7, 2012 a Celebration of our dear Dad, Grandpa and Great-Pa's Life will take place at 1:00 p.m. in The Khartum Shrine Centre, 1155 Wilkes Avenue. Masonic Service ritual regalia worn. Thank you to the nursing staff on 4 South at the Grace General Hospital, and special thanks to Carol who had a special way with Dad that kept him upbeat and joking. Thank you as well to Doctors Hutfluss and Janjua. A special thank you to his good friends and fellow Skooter buddies Joel Segal and Jack Carmichael for all that you were and all that you did for Dad, and Sandy and Remi Cote for the years of memories and support. The family would like to express deep gratitude for all the support given at this very difficult time. In lieu of flowers, donations in Al's memory may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, 193 Sherbrook Street, Winnipeg, MB R3C 2B7 or the Alzheimer's Society, 10 - 120 Donald Street, Winnipeg, MB R3C 4G2. • Sorry for your loss. I remember all the good times we had together and felt I was part of your family Regards Lordy - Posted by: JEFF LORD (FRIEND) on: Sep 10, 2012

  • To Valerie and Sandy, and the greater Jelliff family my thoughts are with you at this time. Your father was a wonderful man. He was a loyal friend to me and the Kelley family for the past 46 years. That’s a long time and I may not have the count quite right but the Mercury Bay that we grew up on was a place where hard working principled people lived and raised their children. People like your father. We are influenced by many things as we grow, and observing that your parents never ceased to help the neighbors around them sticks in my mind. Al, as you all, supported my family in the time of our greatest need and for that I am ever thankful. Al was someone I turned to for assistance as a young man and oft sought to visit upon return trips to Winnipeg. He was there to speak at my wedding and there to see my children when I came to visit. As I recall it was your family’s tradition to cross the palm of a new baby with silver and I can still picture your mother doing that with my son, Al of course looking on. Your dad was the salt of the earth, generous, helpful, and unwavering. I am sad that he has passed and wish that you can all revel in the happy memories of the lives that you shared together. - Posted by: Glenn Kelley (Friend and Neighbour) on: Sep 07, 2012
