GORDON CHARLES GRICE June 17, 1923 - September 5, 2012 It is with sadness the family announces the passing of Gordon Charles Grice on Wednesday, September 5, 2012 at Golden West Centennial Lodge. Loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend, Major Grice served as a Salvation Army officer for many years with appointments in various centres across Canada including Hamilton, Vancouver, Winnipeg, and Saskatoon. Left to forever cherish Gordon's memory are his wife Violet; sons David (Lynn) and Donald; grandchildren David (Allison), Jeremy, and Rebecca; sisters Joan and Janet (Miron); and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents William and Althea Grice; brothers Ken, Harold, Fred, and sister Jean. Gordon was born in Windsor, Ontario and grew up in nearby Roseland savouring the joys of country living, fields and ponds to explore, and trees to climb. After high school, he spent time at the Ford Trade School and also served with the Royal Canadian Air Force. He discovered a passion for teaching children and attended Normal School in London. Gordon's teaching career took him to various locations in Ontario. Friends readily knew Gordon not only loved a good joke, he also knew how to tell one. He could see the humour in many situations, often responding with hearty, unrestrained laughter. He loved history, especially events and details related to the Second World War, and the sinking of the Titanic. He made events come alive as he recounted the details with great enthusiasm. Gordon incorporated both his sense of humour and love of history in his effective preaching style. His strength as a Salvation Army officer was his pastoral care for people of all ages. He had the ability to show a genuine interest in the details of people's lives. On Tuesday, September 11, 2012 Gordon's Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. in Heritage Park Temple, 825 School Road, Winnipeg. For those who wish viewing will begin at 1:00 p.m. Gordon's family has been deeply touched by the wonderful care shown by the Golden West team and wishes to express heartfelt thanks. His family also wishes to say thank you to all who have visited and supported him. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Salvation Army Heritage Park Temple or The Salvation Army Golden West Centennial Lodge. Wojcik's Funeral Chapel in care of arrangements.

Condolences & Memories (7 entries)

  • Our condolences. We were visiting in Winnipeg and learned of your dad's death only in mid November. - Posted by: Eva and bill scott (Friends of Dave and Lynn) on: Nov 12, 2012

  • As a young teen in Windsor, Ontario I saw a young Gordon Grice for the first time on a city bus. He was dressed in Salvation Army uniform and I was impressed that he wore it with such dignity. Later, the Olivers and the Grices met, now all as Salvation Army Officers, and I was able to relay to Gordon and Vi the lasting impression of that early encounter. Gordon never changed. He loved to laugh and always enjoyed a humorous story, yet he always carried himself with a sense of christian compassion and great dignity. "Well done, Gordon, Servant of God." Thinking of his dear one, Vi, and the members of the family. - Posted by: Major Arthur Oliver (Friend) on: Sep 13, 2012

  • It is with sadness that we say good-bye to our dear friend, Major Grice. However, on the other side he is greeted with rejoicing. I can just picture Major and Sam telling jokes with such laughter that tears come rolling down their cheeks- just like they did here. Remembering how they would sit on the couch really close so they would not miss a word of their wonderful conversations. The reunion must be glorious beyond our imagination. To Mrs. Grice and family, our deepest condolences. We have been so privileged to have known such a dear loving Christian gentleman now Promoted to Glory. - Posted by: Natalie and Monty Austin (Friends) on: Sep 11, 2012

  • Major Grice always showed "love in action" to our family. My boys often spoke about seeing "Mr. Grice" walking along the creek and always stopping to give a wave and say "Hello, young Ritson!". He will never know the influence that he had on them. We also appreciated his humor, and his relationship with our Dad, who was a Gordon as well - and who in recent years, was a 'next door neighbour' at Golden West until our Dad's passing last year. Blessings to the family - Major Grice was truly a wonderful man, and will be greatly missed. - Posted by: Erva & Don Ritson and family () on: Sep 10, 2012

  • To Mrs. Grice and the family We were saddened to hear of Gordon's passing and want to reassure you of our thoughts and prayers at this difficult time. We are so grateful to have known him and his wonderful Christian spirit. It was always a joy to be in his presence. He had such a kind and generous spirit. As a spiritual leader over many years he has made a difference in countless lives that only heaven will reveal. Well done good and faithful servant enter into the joy of the Lord you served so faithfully. God bless and comfort you all. - Posted by: Majors Wilson & Winnie Perrin () on: Sep 09, 2012

  • My prayers and loving thoughts to Mrs. Grice and the many friends and family. Mr. Grice was always quick to offer me a warm smile, a gentle hug and often, a smooch on the cheek! His calm strength, prayers and compassion eased the pain of loss in my family; Mr. Grice's friendship was, I know, a beautiful treasure in my dad's life and it helped carry my dad - and indeed, our family - along difficult journeys. Mr. G - I'll remember you with fondness... Blessed Be. - Posted by: Angela Flaherty (Friend of the Family) on: Sep 09, 2012

  • My heart, thoughts and prayers go to the family at this time. My father was very grateful for the opportunity to be able to spend some time chatting and getting to recently know his step-brother and cherished the many phone calls and letters. They are finally together again. - Posted by: Sylvia Samek (step-niece) on: Sep 08, 2012
