HELEN J. FEIR Helen J. Feir, our dear Mum, Gran and Great Gran, died peacefully at Royal Jubilee Hospital in Victoria, BC, on September 11, 2012. She was 95. Helen was born in Winnipeg on February 22, 1917 - the only daughter of George and Mary McKay. She is predeceased by her husband Harry, her grandson Jon Russell, and her three brothers and their wives (George and Sylvia, Dave and Isabel, Bill and Marguerite). Helen is survived by her loving family - Helen Russell (Brian), Jon (Randy), all of Galiano Island, and Jim (Marilyn) of Toronto; her grandchildren Gillian (Frédérik Lesage and great-grandson Finn); Sean Robertson; Caitlin and Alyssa (fiancé Matthew Baker). She is also survived by nephews and niece - Bill, David and Michael, John and Betty. Mum was an indomitable spirit. She enjoyed bowling and curling into her 90s. After she suffered a second stroke we persuaded her to move to the coast to be closer to family. She came to love her life at the Peninsula in Sidney (and the caring staff there), and her frequent trips to Galiano. We all loved having her. She was wonderful company, loved helping with crosswords, loved beating us regularly at cards and tiles, enjoyed Jon and Randy's beautiful garden, was glad to be able to read and to knit mitts for family and friends. She was a longtime fan of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers (although her patience had been sorely tested this year); she would have been happy if there had been a 24/7 curling channel. The family plans to gather on Galiano at Christmastime to celebrate Helen's life. In honour of a great lady, friends might consider a donation to St. Margaret of Scotland Anglican Church, 300 Burrill Road, Galiano V0N 1P0 or to the Sandra Schmirler Foundation, 1660 Vimont Court, Orleans, ON K4A 4J4.

Condolences & Memories (1 entries)

  • Through Jon, it was my pleasure to have met Helen and enjoyed her company at excursions to Jon and Randy's place at the lake outside Winnipeg. She was an adventurous and stimulating person to have the opportunity to spend even a brief amount of time with. Although I know her loss will be difficult to bear for her wonderful family, they can be comforted by the long and cherished time they had with her. My sincere condolences to Jon (Randy) and Helen (Brian) as you continue forward with the fond memories of a lifetime of wonderful experiences with your mom. Kind regards, Bruce Rasmussen (formerly of Winnipeg / now in Victoria, BC) - Posted by: Bruce Rasmussen (Family Friend) on: Jan 17, 2013
