MICHAEL RUSSELL RUTHERFORD 1945 - 2012 Suddenly, on the morning of Saturday, September 15, 2012 Michael Russell Rutherford (formerly of Winnipeg, MB), passed away at the age of 67 at his home in Bradenton, FL. He will be remembered by his wife Sandy, her son Jason Vine, his daughters Shannon Rutherford and her son Zachary Schuerbeke, Patty Penner (Jason) and their son Simon, and many other extended family and friends. He was predeceased by his mother and father, Dorothy and William and his brother Gary. Born in Winnipeg in 1945, Mike grew up in Norwood and entered into the family business, Prairie Remanufacturing Ltd. in St. Boniface. In 1978, he moved his family to Bradenton, FL where they enjoyed boating, road trips and the beautiful weather. Mike and his wife Sandy eventually retired to Florida where they lived for many happy years. His grandson, Zach was fortunate enough to visit his grampa this past spring where they got to know each other and had a great time at Disneyworld. Mike had a commission from Her Majesty's Armed Forces where he was proud to achieve the rank of second lieutenant. He was also a Shriner in the Masonic Lodge. Cremation has taken place in Florida and a private family memorial is planned in Winnipeg for next spring. • My sincere condolences to the family of Michael Rutherford. I am a first cousin to Michael's father, William. I also worked with William at McCabe Grain Company for a number of years and we enjoyed each other's company greatly. Although I did not know Michael personally, I wish to send this note to let the family know our thoughts are with you at this sad time. - Posted by: Ernest E. Madill (Second Cousin?) on: Sep 27, 2012

  • I met Mike several years ago when he hired me to work in the office he managed. He was a very kind person and always a very patient trainer. He was considerate of all our clients and well liked by everyone he worked with. He will be missed and often remembered. - Posted by: Becky Solis (Work Associate) on: Sep 24, 2012

  • It was an honour to have Michael as a brother-in-law. The compassion and unselfish commitment of time he gave my sister to help my mother during her final years of her illness barely begins to describe the depth of his character. He was a man with a big heart, a warm inviting smile and a sincerity of manner that engaged you and made you comfortable in his presence. In spite of his illness he never complained and lived his life as he wanted. His devotion to his father and other family members was truly admirable; always available and willing to do the little things that made their life better even to his detriment. Friends and former employees I have met who knew Mike always spoke very highly of him. However, I also saw the love that he had for my sister and her son. It was deep and unquestionable which for me was the true expression of his character. He was there and despite his limitations he always contributed, in all ways, to make their life together a happy one. Was he a saint? No. Was he a man? Undoubtedly and I will miss him greatly. - Posted by: Dr. Richard L. Kofsky (Brother-in-Law) on: Sep 22, 2012

  • Mike and I were best friends during our late teens and early twenties. We were very close. We shared some very emotional times together. Mike was a kind, caring, and giving person. Unfortunately, when Mike moved to the states our relationship weakened, however, he was always in my thoughts and prayers. I tried for years to locate Mike but was unsuccsful. I only wish I could have been there for him during his latter years. Sandy, you were good for Mike and I am sure you will miss him imensely. I hope that we will some day be able to meet with you.
