MARGERY MARY MENZIES Margery Mary Menzies (née Findlay), died quietly on Monday, September 17, 2012 at Misericordia Place in Winnipeg, at the age of 97. Born June 4, 1915, Marge was the fifth of six children of Fred and Marie Findlay, and grew up on Edgehill Farm, outside of Shoal Lake. After high school, she attended normal school (later the Manitoba Teachers College) in Winnipeg, and taught in Napinka, MB for several years in the late 1930s. In 1940 she married George Menzies of Oakburn, who joined the R.C.A.F. soon after. During the war Marge and George lived in various places between Manitoba and the Atlantic, while George completed his training as a navigator. Following the war, they returned to Oakburn where they stayed until they moved to Shoal Lake in 1950. Marge and George had four children: Diane in 1944, Donald in 1947, Wendy in 1955, and Ian in 1959. Apart from being a mother and wife, Marge was an avid gardener who enjoyed helping nature flourish and bloom around her, spending untold hours tending her award-winning garden, and scores of houseplants. She was active in the community, a member of the Rebeccas, delivered hot food for Meals on Wheels, was a long time member of the United Church Women, and was the United Church organist for many years until arthritis forced her to stop. She prepared baskets of Christmas goodies for elderly neighbours and shut-ins, and claimed to make the best biscuits in town. In the late 1980s Marge and George left Shoal Lake and moved into Winnipeg, spending the summers there, and the winters in Mesa, AZ. After her husband's death in 1992, Marge sold their mobile home in Mesa and lived in her condo in Winnipeg until moving to the Misericordia Place Care Home. She is survived by three of her children, Diane of Campbellford, ON, Don of Winnipeg, and Ian of San Francisco, CA, and her sister Muriel Stimpson of Burnaby, BC. There are also six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Wendy died in 2005. Following cremation a memorial service will be held at Westminster United Church in Shoal Lake, at 2:00 p.m. on October 20, 2012 with interment to follow at the Shoal Lake Cemetery.
