DEVINDER SHARMA On Thursday, September 20, 2012, Devinder peacefully left this world after a courageous battle with cancer. He was at home, surrounded by family and friends. Devinder was born in India, in 1939, to Pheru Ram and Manorma Sharma. He immigrated to Canada in 1973. Shortly after arriving in Winnipeg, he started working with New Flyer Industries until his retirement in 2003. Papa, as he was affectionately referred to, had a love of cooking that gained him legendary status as the best cook in Winnipeg ! He was known for his delicious samosas and ability to make any recipe taste better! Papa was also looked to for his knowledge of Ayurvedic medicine and intuitive ability to offer remedies for any ailment. But above all, he was known for his generous spirit. Devinder was supportive, selfless, open-minded and a nurturer who made all those around him feel loved and cared for. Everyone who knew him felt they had a special relationship with him. His greatest pleasure was spending time with family and friends. Indeed, the evening before his passing, he celebrated his 37th wedding anniversary in their company. In loving remembrance of Papa are his wife, Nirmla Devi, his children Rakesh (Vi), Kusham (Jeremy), Susan (Justin) and Karen (Angela) and his grandchildren Raven (Samantha) and Jai and his beloved dog, Charlie. He will also be dearly missed by his siblings Oma, Lajpat Rai (Savitri) and Kanta (Romesh) and his brother-in-law Prem Sanggar (Darshana), along with numerous nieces, nephews and friends. Devinder was predeceased by his parents, his sister Ramo and his brothers-in-law Charanji Lal and Mohan Lal. Over the past two years, Papa's strength never faltered while he underwent surgeries and treatment. Even during this time, his care and concern for others took priority over his own needs - a true testament to his spirit. His family would like to thank the staff at CancerCare Manitoba and the Manitoba Palliative Care Program for their support and kindness. Special thanks to Drs. Maksymiuk, Shah, Pathak, Quon, Stimpson and Garcia, and nurses Meghan, Marissa, Pam and Jha. Forget not that I shall come back to you. A little while, and my longing shall gather dust and foam for another body. A little while, a moment of rest upon the wind, and another woman shall bear me. -- Kahlil Gibran As Papa has generously donated his body to the University of Manitoba's Body Bequeathal Program, no funeral service will be held. A Shanti Path (prayers) will be delivered for Devinder on Monday, September 24, 2012, from 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Hindu Temple, 854 Ellice Avenue. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in memory of Devinder to CancerCare Manitoba.

It's a great loss for our family and all the people who know him at his home town in India too, where the stories of his generosity and bravery are so common. People still are so fond of him though he left his home town some 39 yrs earlier. He will always be remembered by them as BHALWAAN (powerful, one who wrestles ).. his nick name he is famous with in his home town at Garhshankar. - Posted by: Vikrant Agnihotri (Nephew) on: Sep 26, 2012

Papa was one of the most gracious and noble people I have ever met. I have so many fond memories of visiting the Sharma household that I will forever cherish. I can still picture him standing in the kitchen, wearing a "Cosby" sweater, his hands calmly folded, as various delicacies simmered on the stove, listening to the lively conversations taking place in the living room. Periodically he would laugh and his beautiful smile could be briefly glimpsed before he took a few steps back toward the stove to stir or tinker. I dearly loved and admired Papa and I am so grateful to have met him and spent time with his wonderful family. My sincerest condolences and warmest wishes to you all. - Posted by: Glen Bodner () on: Sep 24, 2012

Dave was a warm and amazing man, with a heart of gold. You always knew when he was cooking, and we would follow the amazing smell, and knew that he would offer some of his famous cooking. Even at a young age, my boys knew their way through the fence gate and would walk over to spend time with Dave and Marla, and knew they were always welcome there. Dave will be missed by all that knew him. Our deepest condolences to Marla, and his family. Kim, Mike, Cody and Austin - Posted by: Kim, Mike, and boys (Friend ) on: Sep 24, 2012
