ETHEL DOREEN DEGELMAN (CURRIE)
Date of Passing: Sep 22, 2012
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryETHEL DOREEN DEGELMAN (nee CURRIE) On Saturday, September 22, 2012, with her family at her side, Doreen (Dodie) passed away peacefully. Doreen is survived by her loving husband, Leo, her children Donna and Cliff Fox, Leona and Syd Enns, and Paul and Crystal Degelman. She is also survived by her grandchildren Josh, Chris and Laura, Katie and Jordan, Ashley and Courtney, and Chelsey and Andreas; along with great-grandchildren Luke, Conner, Violet and baby Avery. She will also be missed by her sister Jessie Benstead, brother Don Currie (Pat), sister-in-law Ruby Degelman, the many nieces, nephews, and dear friends she loved so much. Doreen was born on July 30, 1925 in Winnipeg (Brooklands). Her childhood was not without hardships but she emerged with a great faith in God and a closeness with her sisters Mary, Jessie and brother Don, and dear cousin Francis Buxton. What started as a blind date in a rumble seat led to a lifetime of love with Leo. It was said that Leo was captivated by her raven black hair and radiant smile. Having recently celebrated their 64th Wedding Anniversary, their love and devotion to each other has been an example for all. Doreen was devoted to the well-being of her family, to her church and to friends and neighbours. Her generous spirit and unselfish nature are best exemplified by the tireless caregiving she provided her elderly parents and siblings. Doreen especially loved the happy times spent at the Clytie Bay cottage. In particular she always looked for someone to challenge her to a game of cribbage. Having a birthday in the middle of the summer also made for a multi-day lake party! But most important to her, the cottage brought her loved ones together. Our family would like to thank the staff at Victoria Hospital ICU, especially Debbie and Brent for their care. A service to honour Doreen's life will be held on Saturday, September 29, 2012 at 1:00 p.m. at Joy Lutheran Church, 2-50 Barnes St., Winnipeg, MB R3T 4Z7 (beside Bison Drive Superstore). Viewing will take place prior to the service at 12:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, a gift may be made to The Heart and Stroke Foundation or Joy Lutheran Church. Mrs. Degelman was known to me in my early days simply as `The Candy Lady`. This because every visit to her Cabin started with the candy jar coming out. As a kid, I was so excited. Later in life she became `the cribbage Guru`.If you beat Doreen at crib you would walk away proud (almost never beat her). I remember so many nights listening to her calm voice and wonderful laugh. Later in life, I recall thinking how stable and loving the relationship between Leo and Doreen was. They really showed me the value of a strong marriage. I will miss you `Candy Lady`. Warm condolences to the Degelman Family. Love Greg, Brenda, Michael and Charlie Roy. - Posted by: Greg, Brenda, Michael & Charlie Roy (Friends) on: Sep 29, 2012
